I found out that I have a kidney stone(5.3mm) in my right kidney.After three days my left kidney started to hurt.Doctor said I didn't need to do ultrasound but he suspected it to be another stone.He said since I have found out that I have have a kidney stone I should drink a lot of water and it'll work for both kidneys.Its been five days but it hasn't hurt yet.They are saying the pain is going to be excruciating if it comes.How long does it generally take the stone to pass?
what can I do to lessen the pain?

Im only 13 years old and i am pretty sure i have a kidney stone because i have severe back pain and i can hardly stand up straight. Is that normal??

I went to the doctor last week and found out I have 7 stones 1 5cm the other 6-7cm. I feel your pain literally. I will tell you that the best why to describe it is it's like pissing a sandspur mainly depends on the size and shape. good luck

I passed 2 kidney stones yesterday.  One in the am, one about 6 hours later.  I have had 2 previous episodes.  The first I went to the ER & they hooked me up to an IV drip & a catheter & I immediately passed the stone! They said it was the size of a grain of sand!  I nearly passed out driving myself the one mile to the hospital.  Then 1 1/2 years later I had another one.  I lay on the living room floor in shock & sure I was going to die & then it too passed.  That got me to thinking.  Both times I was in shock & all the vessels in my body were limp essentially.  And in the ER they 'forced fluids' into me.  I decided 2 things.  One- I had to find something to treat myself with to avoid another episode as I was sure I wouldn't make it thru a 3rd stone & I have had no insurance since I left being a science teacher 15 years ago.  (Answer: Kombucha tea.  I made it nearly 4 years before stones 3 & 4 on the same day & I had been drinking 1/2 the tea I had been for 3 years due to changes in living conditions.)  Two- I would take a Valium (diazepam) & constantly sip water (force fluids on myself) if it happened again.  It did, I did & 2 hours later I passed stone 3, 1 1/2 hours after stone 4 started it too was over!! I can handle that much pain knowing it would end in less than 2 hours!  I recommend trying that next attack & hope it works as well for you.  I don't fear another attack now which is a big plus also.  Good Luck Everyone

Yes you can pass it with a lot of pain most likely. Usually anything over 8mm requires ultrasound. Ask your doctor about flowmax. It helps you go to the bathroom. I was born with a condition that causes my body to create kidney stones. I have been to the emergency room 4 or 5 times in the past 18 years for the large stones, small ones pass ok. My first stone caused bleeding and severe back pain also with pain in the lower abdomen area along with hot/cold flashes and vomiting. It may feel like someone is squeezing your kidney while at the same time stabbing it with an ice pick. I first though it was my appendix. I was wrong.
Water, water, water. I have to drink plenty of water every day. This helps to flush it out and to keep the kidney tissue from squeezing the stone. Drink enough water to make the urine light yellow to almost clear. Stay away from soft drinks if you can help it and processed foods high in sodium.
I currently have a large one in each kidney right now around 7mm-8mm in size which may require the doctor to blast with ultrasound.
Products with citric acid, mainly lemons will help prevent new one from forming although it will not help any current ones.Good luck.

It can take weeks to pass .. "if" it's going to pass.  And depending on the stone itself it may or may not be excrutiating.  I've passed about 6 of them arund 4.0 mm's ea., and some hurt more than others but I've been lucky and never was in the ER for pain meds with any of mine.
