I have 3 stones in my right kidney 2mm 1.5mm and a 3 mm. I am wondering if they can cause pain while still in the kidney, i do not believedthey have moved out but am am haveing alot of flank pain

Funny I had a Kidney Stone 7mm removed with lithotripsy and followed by a bladder stone 03/2012 and they checked my calcium and vitamin D levels but not mag.  Hmmmm.
Now you have me wondering because I don't want it to happen again...the pain the emergency room visit at 3:30am, the lost work time, the trauma to my penis when he pulled the stent out of my bladder...ouch! He took his camera up there!!! He never told me he was gonna bring his camera!
Anyway, back to the magnesium.  They monitor my calcium level and told me I am Vitamin D deficient but never anything on magnesium!
I take multi vitamin but do not know how much magnesium a middle-aged male should have?

Since there are several posts on Kidney stones, Id like to share my research results that could possibly afford relief to kidney stone sufferers. I am a recently retired ICU RN and I did not realize until now how important Magnesium is in our lives. Its important to know whats the right kind to take as well. This knowledge could help so many people out there .. if they only knew so I wanted to help spread the word...... It would take some reading and research on your part to be able to help yourself.  I am not allowed to put in the dosage of supplements here , but the books I listed will give the answers.

Kidney stones can be or are caused by too much calcium and lack of Magnesium > Since you are researching. I'd like to direct you to Search "Magnesium and kidney stones". This is one sure sign of lack of Magnesium, also included are gall stones, anxiety, depression, suicidal tendencies, stressed out feeling, tremors, seizures, fear of the unknown, numbness of extremities, pain in extremities, dizziness, high BP, unstable blood sugar, irregular, rapid heart beats, memory loss, insomnia, restless leg syndrome, cramps, - and hundreds more., Dr Carolyn Dean's book is amazing. "The Magnesium Miracle.". It will help you understand your symptoms and have instructions what Magnesium to take and how much, and you will be amazed at what problems lack of Mg can cause. You tube is another good source for searching on Magnesium, several clinicians have recorded their reports and findings. Also make sure to take note of oral magnesium replacement and transdermal Mg at the same time. Oral Mg takes 6 to 12 months before it would build up enough in your system, while transdermal Mg will work instantly but you have to spray it on frequently. I got used to it. I use both but oral replacement is much simpler eventually. I have put my whole household, friends and family on Mg supplementation. You probably will end up doing the same once you do your research. Its best to get the books too. They have further info that won't be on line nor on Youtube.  
The other book is "Transdermal Magnesium" by Dr. Mark Sircus... with instructions on how to use it , He is also on You tube. Taking Magnesium will also require including Vit D3, Vit B complex and Calcium rich foods (not pills) for balance.

Hi everyone.. about a month ago i got a sudden server pain in my lower stomach ! A burning sharp horrible pain so bad I went to the hospital..I mean I'm normally very good with pain I've given birth naturally! But this pain made me cry like a baby .. they tested my urine and there was some slight blood in there as well as some white blood cells ? They did a ultrasound sound and found my right kidney to be bigger than it should be and a obstruction ? I went home with them saying I need a ct scan ...at this point the pain had gone so I was happy to go home .. but the pain came back and then it went into my back as well this continued for about 4 days happening early hours of the morning late evening and early morning .. does this sound like kidney stones as I'm really worried its something more serious..I'm 31 a female and my ct scan is tomorrow. I'm scared . So any advice would be great .x

Thanks It is nice to know I am not alone!  I ended up going into the er on sunday morning and found out that i have a 1.3 mm and a .7 mm stone in my right urteter. So i suppose the answer is that the pain was there because they did move out, lol. Anyway this is only my second time dealing with them even though it is only a few weeks apart, and would apprechiate any info you have on the subject. I still have about 5 stones in my right kidney so i am sure i will be dealing with this often. I will definately keep in touch, and if i can ever be of help to you just let me know.

Hi and WELCOME to our Kidney Stone Community.  I'm not a doctor, but do have too much experience with kidney stones.  For me, I'd get pings and pangs in my kidney as well as microhematuria (blood you cannot see by eye) in my urine when I have stones.  I've also had the flank pain you describe .. for me it's been in the lower back.  I hope with lots of water your stones move out for you uneveventfully.

Please keep in touch.  From what I've read stones <5.0mm usually move out on their own with a high % of non-complications, etc.
