not sure what is causing the pain

Almost a year ago, I developed excruciating back pain. It felt like it was right in the middle of my spine and it would feel like someone puched or kicked me. It would wake me up from sleep and it lasted a few weeks.
my internist ordered an xray and said other than some arthritis, it showed nothing abnormal.

In December, the pain came back. I was at my follow up at my rhuemy and asked her about it. She felt around and said that was my kidney area and did a urine test (which was normal) and gave me an order for a kidney ultrasound.
I had to wait over a week for the test and by that time, the pain stopped, so I cancelled the appt.

Last week, I was very sick to my stomach with pain, a lot of grumbling/movement and nausea. I also had constant belching and couldn't stay awake. That lasted for 2 days..then the back pain came back again

It comes and goes.  When it comes, it feels like someone punched me and is sometimes about one inch to the right of my spine in the middle of the back. Sometimes, it spreads all the way across my whole back. It makes me very nasueous and sometimes takes my breath away.

I went for the ultrasound the other day and dr said other than a small stone, everything was normal and he didn't know why I was in so much pain.

I thought I was going to scream during the exam. It hurt really bad when she was pressing.
Nothing seems to help it....advil, skelaxin, stretching. It just goes away on its own after a while.

Today, when it came back, I felt a burning pain in my chest and back both.

Could this be from a "small stone" that the radiologist blew off?  If so, how long should it last and is it normal to come back every few months?

thank you for reading!

Have you heard anything as to what caused your pain? I have a burning sensation in my back, just below the bar line. it is mostly on the left side. it runs down my back to the lower area. They said I have blood in my urine but no infection. Then they sent my urine to be cultured, it came back positive for infection. They put me on macrobid, which it turns out I am allergic to.  So they put me on Cipro 500mg once a day for 3 days. I still have the pain. It sometimes runs over my shoulder into my left arm or the back of my left hand. It is always a burning. It does feel like something is pinching my spine. Sometimes the burning runs around my left side under my arm, not in the pit just below it. I will be seeing the urologist in June, they will do another CT and a Cystoscopy. I think it is a stone or a kidney infection. So I don't know why they want to do the Cystoscopy, which I am affraid of.

Hello and hope you are doing well.

There could be many causes for the pain you are experiencing. If the pain starts at the back and goes down to the front of the abdomen, it could most probably be a renal colic. This happens when urine is trying to pass through an obstruction usually a stone. But this pain is very severe and colicky. And sometimes a small stone can pass through and may not be detected by ultrasonography or X-rays. Other causes for pain could be peptic ulcer disease and GERD. So, don't worry and discuss these options with your doctor.

Hope this helped and do keep us posted.
