Sterile After Transplant

Hi

My husband had a allogeneic (Donor - related) bone marrow transplant in July 2007. He seems to Finally be on the road to recovery after a whole list of complications including mild GVHD (Graph Verses Host Disease). We have only been married for 3 years and we have a son (14 months). Before the treatment started his dr suggested we store some sperm because of the risk of sterility... we did. The thing is I'd really like to exhaust all other options to try to concieve a baby naturally. Does anyone out there have any advise regarding this??

Any help would really be great!

My husband went through a BMT 10 years ago. We were told that we would not have any more children. God still does miracles - We have since had 2 more precious baby boys - the natural way! one 3 years after transplant and one 9 years after transplant!

I wish you good luck but hope you realize the chances of your husband having a viable sperm count after large doses of chemothearpy before the transplant, are very slim at best.
My son had a stem cell transplant (sister donor) and suffered several years from GVHD.  His immune system has been severly compromised and he's completely sterile.
So, in the case of having a baby the "normal way" consider yourself lucky to be having your own children any way you can get them.

Hi.
Is your husband on any medications now?
There is a risk of sterility in patients undergoing bone marrow transplant.
The drugs used may have a side effect of decreasing the sperm count or motility.
It would be best to consult your physician for a thorough discussion on this.
Good luck.
