kindergarden kids and infections
our child who is in kindergarden seems to sick a lot this school year. stomach virus/fever in december, sore throat/fever in feb., sore throat/fever in march, and today low fever w/scratchy throat. she seems otherwise healthy but i always think the worst. is this common w/kindergarden age kids? can fevers be that common? any insight would be great. thanks.
she has streap throat after the culture was done. also, she had trace amount of blood in the urine which they are doing a culture too. she doesnt complain of it burning, but did have stomach pains which we were told could all be related to strep. also swollen neck glands, other glands fine.

Children are more susceptible to infections unlike adults because of an immature immune system. It is possible that your child acquires the infection at school, when she is exposed to a classmate who has an infection. As long as there is a source of infection, your child can easily acquire it.
She was diagnosed to have a streptococcal infection after her throat culture. That is easily treated with an antibiotic where streptococcus is sensitive. However, recurrent streptococcal infection in the throat would make a patient prone to rheumatic fever and rheumatic heart disease.
As for the trace amount of blood in the urine, I agree in doing blood culture. Again, streptococcal infection can cause glomerulonephritis (kidney disease). But most of the time, streptococcal skin infection is the cause.
The swollen neck glands are secondary to the throat infection. It can go away after the infection is treated. Sometimes, the glands persist to be enlarged even after treatment.

prelims on the urine test were fine. you mentioned dr. that glands can remain swollen even after the infection subsides. so if this happens, one shouldnt assume its cancer? is this quite common, esp. w/kids.

If there is a recurrence of infection, the previously enlarged lymph nodes can enlarge further. But this does not mean that one has cancer. The best thing to do is continue observing for any changes in those lymph nodes. Report to your doctor right away any changes you notice.
