Ascites?

Hello, I was referred to a gastroenterologist by my PCP for abdominal pain, bloating and ULQ pain. The gastro ordered an MRI which came back normal except for a cyst on my liver and 'trace hepatic ascites'.. the gastro said  it was nothing to worry about. However, in researching ascites, it seems to be caused by some pretty serious things, so I'm concerned.  Is it 'not to worry' because it's just a trace? Is this ever benign or naturally occurring? Perhaps it's not actually ascites but another kibd of fluid? The Dr. referred to it just as fluid around the liver but the MRI does call it ascites...

Thank you. I haven't been tested for anything wrt the liver, so that was my concern as far as a not being concerned attitude when nothing of that sort had been ruled out. The gastro did order a blood panel in conjunction w the MRI but it was all related to stomach, glucose, ferritin, and a CBC. However I would assume the MRI would have shown abnormality of the liver? Again, thanks.

Hi Court -

Hope all is well! Just a followup to make sure that you are normalized now.

Given your recent pregnancy, you shouldn't worry too much. You haven't mentioned liver disease so I assume you are normal wrt that. And you are 29 so advanced fibrosis isn't likely. Pregnancy has been known to cause ascites for several different reasons. It should resolve itself slowly. Your body doesn't have a way to drain the abdominal cavity, it will slowly get absorbed. Take care!
