How do you know what stage, and type your in?

My husband has Cirrosis, they do not know how long he has had it or what for sure it has come from. They say if it was his drinking so very long aga (back in the 70's)  it should of showed up sooner than this, so they are saying it may be hereditary from his family or from being over weight most of his life. His ammonia level was 80 in Dec of 08 than dropped to 62 than to 42 now last week back up to 65.  We have not been told what type this is and what stage it is in, is there anyway to find this out or does someone here know. We never knew he had this till Dec, 22,2008.
I have never known anyone to go thru this and I am very scared as I do not know what lies ahead. I do know he is not a canidate for liver transplant as his health is not good enough and they said he would die on the operating table. I do know he has those things that can cause internal bleeding as they have shown up on erays and cat scans. I am scared and worried can anyone help me with any of these questions. I want to learn more about what we are going to be going thru as knowing for me is better than not knowing. If you can help me, I would greatly appreciate the help.
Thank You

I wen't through this from the begging. It started 16 years ago.I fellt week, and I wen't to the Doctor.I had a blood test, and 2 days I was told I had Hep-c.I  don't know where I got it from.I went to a GI Doctor.I wen't throught all of the Meds that was  a avable.I did not work.Short story, I was a heavy drinker too.I thought nothing would happen. It came home from work and started Bleeding.I wen,t to the Hospital and had blood transfusions. This happened many times, about 6 times in four years in the Hospital. The first thing that they did, was to put a stint in my body. This gives better flow to the liver.I have been on the liver transplant list for 10 years.I don't wan't to get you scared, but 7 years ago I had enternal bleeding, and I was in a coma.I had my last rights but I got out of the coma.I could not walk Talk or remember my Family's faces.I went through rehab for a while, and now I am ok.I had the best Gi Doctor. If not for him I would not be here.If you have any quistions, e-mail me at ***@**** luck Alan
