Weight-Gain Diet for Cirrhotic???

What can I cook /shop to gain weight as a cirrhotic. Fat and Protein is hard to metabolize consequently suffer from slow and conjestive digestive.  Inspite of eating healthy doses of a diet of fruits, chicken, fish, starches, I have lost 25 pounds in the last couple of years  ---- but my loss seems to be in muscle and fat mass.

In the past couple of months alone I have lost 2 pant sizes although my belly fluctuates from extremely big after meals to down very slowly. I am a male over 6 foot tall and feel fair overall otherwise. My spouse says she noticed the largest weight loss when I started taking lactulose every day. Before that I was taking the lactulose once a week or so.
My doctor says weight loss is a result of the cirrhosis, however, my facial, shoulder, extremeties and other parts of me can definitly use some meat.I look comparably similar to the starving people in third world countries. I can't seem to
gain weight with all the food I eat. I am weary of Ensure, Boost and those supplemental products since they are packed with vitamins that my liver may not be able to metabolize. I am also afraid of the Hight Protein, High Amino Acids Whey Powders so I was wondering if there is a diet or medicine or something I can ask my doctor for. He doesnt seem to be very attentive to my weight problem. In fact,he always advocates being thin so as to not to tax my liver, but I am now beyond thin... I don't know if I will be able to survive an illness being THIS thin.

the GNC product seems OK to use.  The 300gms seems like a lot--i would recommend 200-250.  as long as you have no severe problems with confusion there is no problem with the additional protein.  the lactulose should not hinder your nutrition at all.

this unfortunately is a major problem without a lot of simple answers.  the key is eating frequent small meals throughout the day ("grazing").  You must eat at least 1.5 gms proteing/kg body weight to maintain stability.  Ensure and other nutritional supplements are definitely OK and we encourage their use.  The patient with cirrhosis has an accelerated catabolic response to starving so maintaining a constant source of any type of calories is essential.

i hope this is helpful.

thank you for your response, Doctor.

1- GNC sells some high amino acid/ high carb weight gain powders.  Are these products safe for people with decompensated liver?

2- I am 192 Ibs now, down from 200, @ 6' 2", and would like to return to my 200 weight. 1.5 grms x 200 weight goal and maintanance requires 300 grams of protein daily. Is that much protein safe for cirrhotics/decomp liver to even try reaching this goal?
I have been trying to keep high carb/caloric with low sodium up to now.

3- Taken daily, does the lactulose prevent the protein / carbs / calories to benefit my body in terms of gaining weight? Am I fighting a losing battle?
