I had a liver transplant in 2001 and was on a vent for 5 months, coma for 6 months.  I was left with some residual encephalopathy after wards (had encephalopathy before, too) and some central nervous system problems (poor balance, problems walking, cannot do steps, fall a lot, etc) Since I was in coma so long I had to re learn to walk, etc and its been difficult even though it has been 9 years.  I am very forgetful now, and had to eventually stop working following my transplant recovery because of my bad memory problems and physical limitations (I was/am a nurse).  My spouse is very forgiving with my memory problems and patiently tells me the same things 100 times.  Maybe in addition to physical therapy some mind excercises like crossword puzzles, etc could help him keep his mind a little sharper.
I had my transplant in Virginia.  Best wishes to your husband.

i think that he can still recover but he requires aggressive physical therapy and nutritional support so as to avoid developing hospital-acquired infections.

My 6 yrs.old son has undergone liver transplantation on  27/10/2009 in Delhi,India. I am his father, donate part of my liver to my beloved son. After 40 days of hospitalisation he was discharged from hospital. Then after ten days my son lost his total memory. He could not even recognise us (parents ).He could not even tell about passing motion /urine.So we had to admit our son 2nd time in hospital.During hospitalisation doctors carried out different investigations like MRI ,EEG etc after that doctors came to conclusion that this was due to reaction of medicine. At that time  my son was taking Cellcept syrup and Pangraf ( tablet ) as immunosupressing drug.Doctor stopped Pangraf and gave Cyclosporine syrup in leiu of that. After considerable recovery he was discharged from hospital after  10 days.
Now memory of my son is normal and going to school regularly.

Change in some medicine, regular mild exercise may be help your husband.Best wishes to your husband
