Thank you both so much.

Pam,
Ewford's right, babesia is in the same family as malaria -- it's a protozoal infection, not bacterial like Lyme. It needs completely different meds from Lyme.
Malaria is widespread in tropical areas of the world, tho DDT (insecticide spraying) did wonders at reducing the mosquito population decades ago, and it's mosquitos that often carry malaria, just as ticks often carry Lyme. There is some thought that mosquitoes can also carry Lyme, but I've not done any further reading on that point. DDT is a poison and use has now been limited, but it was a blessing against the suffering from malaria. I hope your grandfather didn't suffer too much -- living to 92 is a wonderful thing!
What's important (and nonLLMDs often don't recognize) is that co-infections are very common (Lyme + one or more other diseases) and need different testing, assessment and treatment than 'just' Lyme. Also, docs tend to assume that all these old diseases like malaria don't exist here anymore at any concerning level ... just like 'we don't have Lyme here.' If the docs themselves had malaria or babesia or Lyme, they'd start getting concerned .... or maybe just call it fibromyalgia, a 'syndrome' [=collection of symptoms] 'thought to be caused' [=we don't know what causes it] 'by over-active nerves' [=we're clueless].
Having an open mind is the first and most important thing in a doc, imo.
babesia is a Malaria LIKE illness as it has a flagella like tail and causes symptoms of Malaria. Alot of Pacific Theatre soldiers from WW2 and later wars contracted malaria.
Last night, I was watching video clips on some of the speakers, I couldn't view all of them or the entire video. I have not seen Dr. Horowitz video. I will try again today.
Is Malaria the same thing as Gulf War Illness? My grandfather had Malaria, he just recently passed away at 92.. He lived a great long life, but I was wondering if Malaria is a different term for Lyme or am I way off base! Still sometimes clueless about some things, but I try to learn as much as I can.
Thanks,
Pam :)
