I am so glad you found a doctor.  I hope the pending Lyme law you mentioned provides for treatment.  I have heard frustrating stories of Lyme patients in Canada in dealing with the national health service and how many oatients travel to the US for treatment.

I heard some top official there recently said that there is a lab in California that will give any Canadian a positive Lyme result for a price.  The furious outcry from Lyme patients forced him to qualify his statment, saying he still believed what he said, he just couldn't prove it.  Wow.  He obviously is sold out to the belief that Lyme is hard to get and easy to treat, and also very rare. And these are the people who accuse ILADS docs of being anti-science!  It is hard to believe there is such a campaign of disinformation to protect their pride and status.

IGeneX makes the anti-Lyme crowd furious because they continue to show that more people have Lyme than they want to admit.  In reality, IGenex uses two genetic strains of Borrelia in their test, where other labs just use one.

That is excellent news -- sorry about the 7 hour drive and the wait, but nothing about Lyme is fast or convenient, is it?

Take care -- keep us posted -- and HANG IN THERE!

"Congratulations" (?!) on achieving both IGeneX and CDC positive -- and keep copies of all your tests for yourself for future reference.  They can be hard-to-impossible to get copies of later.

IgM shows more recent infection; IgG shows an older infection.  (Or it's possible you also have an old infection that is SO old that it just doesn't show up on the test, since results tend to trail off over time.)  In any event, you have POSITIVE test results that will help you get treatment.

IgeneX is in Palo Alto CA, not San Antonio.  Docs who believe Lyme is "hard to get and easy to cure" do not trust IGeneX for reasons I don't really understand, except that IGeneX shows more positive results than the other labs.

There is a website for the Canada Lyme group at canlyme.com.  You may be able to located a Canadian LLMD through that website.  Also email to:

                          contact [at] ilads [dot] org

and request a referral, stating the geographic area where you are and that you can get to.  Like all docs, Lyme docs are not all great, so don't be too disappointed if the first one you see is not a good fit.  There's no one-size-fits-all in any of this.

I think I have read that Canadian docs have to work quietly to avoid getting hassled by local medical authorities, as in some states in the US, but it's worth the effort to have a knowledgeable doc.

Hang in there --

Jeanne, I found this online-the difference between IgM and IgG:

IgM is a sign of a current infection.
IgG is a sign of a current infection, or of a past exposure to or past infection by the organism.

A doctor who knows Lyme well would diagnose you with Lyme with those results.  Jackie's answer is really good.  I can just add one piece of info: Band 41 is one of the most common and the earliest antibody to show up with Lyme.  It is for a protein on the flagella, and there are a few other things that also have a flagella, such as syphilis and leptoirosis. Our bodies are quick to recognize a flagella as foreign.

Lyme Literate Medical Doctors generally say that any Lyme specific antibody with Band 41 pretty much confirms Lyme.  I assume IGeneX called your results CDC/NYS NEGATIVE and IGeneX POSITIVE?  Or did it say EQUIVOCAL?  That means you don't meet the CDC (and New York State) surveillance criteria, which wasn't designed to be diagnostic.  It was designed for sampling so it needed to produce a bare minimum of false positives.  As a result there are many false "negatives".

I keep a print out from the website 'truthaboutlymedisease [dot] com' that lists the interpretation of each band, tho different docs may read them differently.

IgM looks for your immune system reaction to a more recent infection; IgG looks for an older infection, so the doc can have an idea how long you've been infected and how your immune system is handling it all.

   --- IGENEX IGM RESULTS are

31 positive -- this shows up positive when Lyme is present (but also when some other viruses are present, so the doc will look for other Lyme indicators, like #34 below)

34 IND -- ditto

58 positive -- unknown, but may indicate Lyme

83-93 positive -- indicates Lyme

   ---- IGENEX IGG RESULTS are

31IND -- same meaning as #31 above

39 IND -- shows up only when Lyme is present

41 DOUBLE POSITIVE -- could be Lyme, could be something else

58 DOUBLE POSITIVE -- unknown, but may indicate Lyme

This looks pretty "Lymie" to me, but there are others here who can parse the details more closely.  Some docs require certain bands to show up positive with at least a certain number of + marks, but wise Lyme docs know that the immune system gives up reacting after a while, although the infection is still there ... so anything that indicates Lyme should be taken seriously and all read together, not just one line at a time -- AND all in conjunction with your history and symptoms.

Good for your doc for using IGeneX labs -- that's a good sign that the doc has a high level of awareness and understanding of Lyme.

Have you discussed the results with the doc yet?
