Dollar Store Anyone!

I saw a segment on the news that the local dollar store fad is now renewed. Everything a dollar!  I have noticed even Walmart is carrying off brand foodstuffs lately so I think I will hit the dollar store for things like toothpasste, cleaning goods, dishwaser soap and such! Then I will hit walmart for everything else and then publix for the meat! I hate Walmarts meat!

So do you think the dollar store could save money? Or is it just one more plug for one more business out there? I do think it is a good thing to give Walmart some competition tho!

I buy some of My cleaning supplies at the Dollar Store. I go to Wal Mart for my personal hygeine stuff. I buy all my food & meats from Publix.

Dollar Tree is not close to where I am, so I don't buy everything from there and also we don't go there often. Certain things like cleaning stuff (they have an immitation "swiffter", you get 3 clothes and a stick). But food I normally stay clear of. They normally never have any appealing food to my eye. Sometimes candies are a good things, like the movie boxes you get from the the theater (that cost like $4.00) for only a dollar. I do like to go there for tissue paper and gift bags, cause I love to decorate my gifts! Card selections are good too. I bought all my Christmas cards last year and they were 2 for $1.00!!

Depends on how much gasoline you have to expend in order to get to all these different stores. Sometimes I end up shopping all at one place for everything just because of gas.

But I do go to the dollar store for seasonal items and sometimes stocking stuffers, etc.

We do the same thing, buy most stuff at Walmart and get our meat from Publix.  Walmart's chicken seems to be o.k. but the red meat and pork is gross. I don't get it because Sam's Club has great meat and it's really the same company. I buy all my cleaning supplies at the Dollar Store too.

in my honest opinion it kinda depends on what u r getting for example my husband bought very cheap garbage bags last time they split spill garbage every where and he ends up triple bagging it,,also I hate doller store dish soap i notice I go through it very fast. toothpast , tissues , shampoo is ok for us no one is needy of special products cause of dry oily skin etc..things like ketchup, and other similar foods I think it doesnt matter. and bleach and many other chemical cleaners are the exact same thing name brand or not.
I agree w above poster about watching out for chinese imports lead is said to be in things like coffe mugs etc,,,and we have all heard about the lack of testing for food products I dont buy any fish from china try not to buy any food from their either.

the doller stores r great for cards, gift bags etc...and school supplies.I think it really depends on the individual.as far as other stuff such as the tissue example, I seldom use them just not a runny nose person but texture doesnt matter to me when I do,

Walmart sells steaks frozen in a box of 12 for around 20 dollers here they are NY strips my family loves them

We have a similar fad store here....correction we have a ton of those type of stores here. Most are Chinese import rubbish though. Not good value for money. Tissues are like sandpaper, toothpaste tastes like dog food. etc etc
One in particular  though Go-Lo is excellent for cheap food and goods. I have shopped there for many years. On a low budget it is imperative I could feed 3 growing kidlets and still get a few nice things for me.
When I get to USA I usually shop at the Dollar Tree store for my bits and pieces. I go to Trader Joe's and Fred Meyers for my food. (gluten intolerant) I bought a little canvas type hand bag to put my camera and other junk in for camping. I am still using it here at home in Oz and it is still going strong! Only $2 too!
Since my weight restriction for flying is only 32 kgs I buy my bits like  shampoo toothpaste etc.at Dollar Tree. What I don't use up I give to friends, so I don't feel I am wasting my hard earned dollars!
Fantastic store and good quality!

Well, I just got back and am amazed at what 20 dollars bought! Wow!  I found stuff like spaghetti sauce, dishwashing soap, all kinds of cleaning stuff like bleach, ammonia, toilet cleaner and toothpaste as well as shampoos, conditioners, all for 1 dollar each! Even found chicken soup by campbells, the bigger size for a dolla! Whew hoo!

Hi teko, where I live, we don't have the 'Dollar' Store; instead, we have 'General' Dollar; so, unfortunately most items are merely marked down somewhat at our store; but, I sure wished we had the "Dollar Store".  Here lately though, I've been purchasing half the items I normally would purchase at Wal-Mart at the General Dollar, in my case, I'm saving on average - a few cents per item; but, it helps / adds up.

I feel that "our" local Wal-Mart does need competition.  My local Wal-Mart is discontinuing so many items lately.  Just when I finally find something I really like and plan to stick with, I go back for it and they tell me they've discontinued that item and that they are going to discontinue a whole lot of other items too.  It's a bit frustrating and if I really do want that item, I have to drive "X" MILES way out of my way to get it at another store or Wal-Mart out of town.

I think many Dollar Stores/Discount Stores will most likely fare better when the economy is like it is; because many are attempting to save and/or make that dollar stretch.
