Sometimes as well -- depending on the house, you can mitigate your allergies if they aren't severe by the places you let your cat be (for instance, not letting the cat sleep in your bed with you, even hough that's a bummer).
I just msgd our animal shelters here to see what policy is! Im hoping i can find something! Maybe a short hair cat will work for me!!
and MJ.. you are right i should see an allergy specialist! I want to do that some day cus i have some food issues as well and i would love to know what im allergic to and what im not!
I had allergies to cats, but when given Waldo (a domestic short/medium-hair), I was surprised I didn't have the reaction I had when I was 12. I had some discomfort with the hair and dandruff, but overall not much. I also did pretty well with my grandma's cat which is black and also a domestic short-hair. I read somewhere that lighter cats are better for people with allergies than darker ones (don't know why).
Anyways, had a recent allergy test and found out I'm no longer allergic to cats, but house dust, roaches, and some plant molds, I am pretty allergic to, probably more so. It may be worth going through an allergy test to see exactly what you're allergic to and how much. You may be surprised and find it isn't cat hair or dander you're allergic to. Don't be ready to rule out the humble domestic cats just yet.
Check out, pet finder . org. They have so many animals that you can adopt. They need good homes. There will probably be an adoption fee but not nearly as much as you would pay to a breeder. Just type in Devon Rex under cats. You may not find one in your town but there are many people who will gladly transport the kitty to a good home.
Good luck with finding your new pet. Take care. Remar
Maybe I could look into something like that! Thats a really great idea I should ask! I dont feel my allergies are severe my SIL has had cats in her house and my allergies were not "killing me" where i couldnt stand it! sometimes i feel the need to get up and wash my hands but nothing too bad!! I do think if I follow the advice online about vacuuming my carpet and maybe getting a humidifier then i would be ok! they say its the dander released into the air that gets you!
It's interesting .. my daughter and son who are allergic to some cats are not allergic to others .. and these are garden mix variety tabby's, etc.! Sometimes rescue groups will allow a few weeks' trial vs. not placing a cat in a good home .. they'll take the cat back if there's an allergy. But, of coruse, if your allergy is severe you don't want to take a chance.

I wanted a Bichon but my MIL insist it will ruin the carpet! and since she owns the house and bought the new carpet for it I'm just SOL!!
have you considered a dog, there are many dogs that are furless and suposedly make people less prone to allergys..we have a German shorthair..hair not fur.2 of my three sons are allergic,we have no problems now my dogs a big baby but he is 85lbs if I had it to do again Id get a smaller dog
Thats such a bummer! Its so expensive! I really want a companion pet! i cant have kids and im a SAHW so im pretty lonely and it would nice to have a lil kitty to take care of!! or something but i was hoping for something not in a cage and something that doesnt make a mess!!
Can you take chinchillas out of their cage? I had thought about that too!
I posted a ? about 3 mos ago on the cats forum about hypoallergenic cats and the leader over there suggested I can buy some fur online to "test" the allergies in my house .. I cannot recall the name but I've also heard it's the dander .. some cats are ok and others are not -- it can be the dander and certain breeds are predisposed to creating the allergic element while others don't have it . There's a name for it. Sorry, but cannot recall that either. I guess I'm not of too much help.
The supposed hypoallergenic cat is a Siberian, but very costly .. between 900+ from what I saw with huge waiting lists.

Found a few things but they cost 900$ Geez!! Guess i cant get one!!
yeah i cant find a breeder though in my town!! I found a couple in my state but didnt look they were still in business!! Gonna try Google sometimes its better!
Cornish/Devon Rex cats found that in 2 seconds..they have hair not fur..so most are not allergic to.
surf the web you can find anything type in " furless cats" you will get hits..or ' cats that dont cause allergies"
