Best and worst about being a parent

In case you are parents, what do you consider the best and the worst parts of being a parent?

The worst about being a first time-parent is that you have soooo many things to learn and you get a feeling that should have known everything all at once. It's a learn-as-you-go. Bullying has been the worst - there is always two sides of a story and you realize there is more than just your kid in it.

The best: The unconditional love, the comments, the smiles, to get a chance to wind down and be in the here and now together with your child

(Mom, your butt is so big that you don't fall down in the toilet....) ,makes you think, but oh how you love it!

Children when they are little they step on your toes, when they grow up they step on your heart.
Children are an inheridance from God.
I love them unconditionaly, somtimes I do not like what they do.
I see the best and the worst in me in them.

ChitChat, that is so true, the unexpected can let us freeze in motion. I guess that`s why calls from school always start with "It`s nothing serious..."
LIZZIE LOU, this must be the ultimate shock, to see one`s children become self-destructive while we always remember them as the innocent, enthusiastic little ones. I am so sorry to hear about your son. You are doing a great thing being on Medhelp to educate people.
Margypops, that empty nest feeling used to be a mystery to me but when my six-year-old went on a brief vacation of a few days without me, I found myself playing with his cars and puzzles, unable for a while to find back to myself...
Dominosarah, thanks for the insight. It makes a lot of sense. I am an "old" first-time mom and probably due to that I love to ignore the dishes in sink as well and just enjoy watching my son grow up. It probably comes with age that one knows to recognize the precious moments in life. The few times I try to ship him off, it says "return to sender" though...

A grandchild..........it is different than your own children.  Hard to explain.  You fall in love with that baby instantly, what used to be important isnt anymore i.e. if there are dishes in the sink who cares, its more important to sit and just look at the baby. You have that extra time to spend with the child.  You have that time to stop and look at worms, bugs, anything that crawls!!!! The million and one questions dont get on your nerves, stuff like that.  The hugs and sloppy kisses, the art work for the refrig etc.  I could go on and on here but i think you get the point!!!!!!  The best part is they go home to their parents!!!!!!!!

the best part to me was when i could take vacations WITHOUT the four of them.
the worst part was having to come back home!!!!!!

seriously now...

the best part was just watching their faces light up with joy.  the worst part was watching 3 out of the 4 of them turn to drugs and self destruct right in front of my eyes.  the ABSOLUTE worst day of my life was when my second son was diagnosed with hiv!!

The best part is watching them grow up and being ready to move on to new chapters in my life as they mature into new chapters in their life!  It amazes me it's a natural event that never lets a parent get bored.

The worst part is the unexpected ..

unexpected:

Phonecall you get from the school principal
Phonecall you get from your teen they are in trouble
Text you get from your teen they want to "talk to you"
Illness when daycare or school calls and you are working---come get them!!
Behavior they do for attn. when you are tyring to something adult-related

When stuff going on with your kids is NOT in the textbook LOL!

Dominosarah, I forgot to ask  - becoming a grandparent for the first time IS indeed one of the greatest moments? I am not quite there yet but I always wondered what the feelings of a new grandparent are. I know many grandmas just love to be reminded of their own motherhood or feel reassured that the genes are passed on through generations and then there are the mother-in-laws who are so thrilled to see their son`s first baby that their daughter-in-laws feel almost pushed out of the way. I always wondered what kind of feelings are going on there. Maybe it is just the joy of life? New life?

Jollyman, I`m sooo sorry to hear about Katie! SIDS is devastating. I hope you will have another chance to have a wonderful child but I know the pain of such loss does not go away. That must truly be the worst!

It is so sweet that all of you see the worst rather in worrying about your children than anything down the line of "wanting to get your life back". The only hard part, at least of single motherhood, I find to be that I have about 360 bad hair days per year. Never enough time to cram all the tasks into one night...
And the best is - just looking at my son and seeing him as the newborn he was and the grown-up he will likely be, thinking what a miracle the development of a child is, how open, loving and well-intended they are born and how much responsibility we have as parents to preserve that goodness in them.

The best parts are watching my girls turn into responsible young adults.

The worst is watching them go thru pain and turmoil in their lives and not being able to make it better.  Oh and the sleepless nights when they were teenagers!!!!!!

The Greatest part is when your daughter lays your first grandbaby in your arms.

For me the worst thing about it...is worrying constantly that I am going to do something to "ruin" my child forever. Or if I mess up his schedule or don't feed him enough veggies.. but I am a worry wart!

The best thing...all of it! We were told (separately before we met) that neither one of us could have kids) so when we found out we were pregnant what a surprise & blessing. So for me every diaper, crying fit, giggle and smile is the best thing. When he reaches for my hand and wants me to come play with him. When he loves to crawl up and sit w/me & Daddy just to snuggle... melts my heart. Seeing him and his Daddy walk out the door to go do Daddy/Son stuff. I count my blessings every day for my wonderful son & family.

Wow...teared up on this one! LOL

I'm sorry to hear that as well. :(

As for the best part of being a parent... I love being able to play with my daughter and teach her new things. Every time she learns something new she makes me SO proud.

Now the worst thing... is having to be at school in the morning but the baby won't go to sleep because she is in pain from teething so you rock her all night long trying to sooth her while she screams in your ear and pulls your hair and then when you finally get her into bed you have to leave. So hard but still I wouldn't trade it for anything!

I am truly truly sorry to hear about your loss...I know there aren't words that can heal your pain. I couldn't imagine such a loss. I know those were 4 wonderful months you had with her though.
God Bless,
JoAnn
