When you grow up, how much will you make?

This is an older article (2007) but the point is well made. Do you have a 5 - 10 year old child? What do they want to be, and how much do they think they'll make?

http://www.forbes.com/2007/10/09/kids-dream-jobs-ent-dream1007-cx_de_1009salary.html

Danielle and Francisco are both 7 years old, in the second grade and live in Newark, N.J. When Danielle grows up, she wants to be a model and thinks she'll be paid $505 a year. Francisco wants to be a spy--and figures he'll earn $500,000 annually.

...

In general, the kids we surveyed showed very little understanding about how much money different jobs actually pay. Younger children tended to grossly underestimate--on average, the 5-year-olds figured police officers make $29 annually, lawyers make $59 and dancers pull in a comparatively huge $165 a year.

And older kids think jobs pay way more than they actually do, a fact that will come as no surprise to any parent who has ever asked a kid, "Do you think I'm made out of money?" On average, 11-year-olds thought astronauts make $362,000 a year, writers $211,000 and dancers $116,000--a far cry from the actual mean annual wages of $87,039 for astronauts, $58,080 for writers and $28,829 for dancers.

Sheesh, I'm a writer (technical) and I'd be *ecstatic* if I made anywhere NEAR $58,080 annually.

I often tell my 5 year old son that I'm not made of money, lol. He means well, though--so whenever I say that, he always offers to donate the change he's saved up in his piggy bank and thinks that'll help to cover everything. Haha, he's such a good kid! :-)
