public, private or home school

someone suggested a type of school post in the pregnancy forum so i figured i'd get it started.

i know the school i went to was GREAT. while i was there. i went back 3 years later when i was writing my thesis for my psychology class. wow....it was AWFUL!!! the kids....were so disrespectful and the teachers i'd known for years and loved were so miserable. the ones who were the most amazing teachers, who helped me to learn and understand in high school looked like they were just.....drained and lifeless. the girls (between the ages of 13-18) were walking around in these tiny, tight, belly showing spaghetti strap tank tops, jeans that were so tight they looked like they were painted on (of course the bum crack was hanging out), or skirts so short the bum cheeks were hanging out OR shorts that looked like undies. i was shocked, horrified and couldn't believe what happened to my alma mater. while i was observing in one of the gym classes i saw a boy and girl kissing in the corner!!! then i saw what shocked me even more....kids walking around on their cell phones... while i was in school all of that behavior and the way they dressed and the use of cell phones was strictly forbidden. if you were caught kissing you were sent to detention. if you came dressed like that the principal sent you home to change and gave you detention. if you were caught with your cell phone the phone was confiscated and after you were caught a second time the phone was confiscated in the office until your parents could pick it up and then the security guard (we did have metal detectors by my senior year) was given instructions to make sure you did not have your phone. if you did it was confiscated till the end of the day. so i asked one of my old gym teachers about it and she said the teachers quit caring b/c the new principal didn't care. i was sickened and heart broken by how my beloved school had turned out.

which do you think is better for your kids? or what are your experiences?

the dh and i are already starting to talk about schools for the boys (even if they are only 9 months old) and we're REALLY leaning towards private school. but neither of us went to private school. we both went to public. my cousin, however, DID go to private school and she said she loved it and when she went back (to register her son for kindergarten) she said it was exactly the same.

I have been to three public schools, four private schools, one charter school, and have been home schooled too. I would have to say that I prefer private school. I went to public school when I was younger but there were still some issues. There were two that basically didn't teach much and another that never worked with me on anything so they tried to put me in a special class or something. I enjoyed the charter school and home schooling. Everyone I know always say that home schooled kids don’t have any friend or anything but I had *tons* and I learned more and better than I did at public school. If you do choose a private school you may want to look into a lot before you decide on it. There were two private schools that I went to that were absolutely horrible. I had this one teacher when I was in the 6th grade who would ask the girls inappropriate questions. When I was in the 4th grade I had my first year of private school. I hated that school so much! I struggled with the homework. There was so much that I would be up until 12 working on it. Most of the students there were troublesome kids who would degrade me. But the private school I am at now is better than the last two although there are still some negative things. I have been to nine schools total and have had many experiences. Basically wherever you go there are going to be positive and negative qualities and I have never been totally happy at any school. Anyway, good luck in whatever decision you decide to make.

I think all have positive and negative qualities. I think it depends on the preference of the parents.  A couple things I think that need considered before a child is school age tho.

Some people own their homes, but lots rent. Check out the schools in the area where you want your child to attend. And stay there for the sake of the child. Moving every year will do more damage than anything they can experience at that age. Ask any child that has been thru it.

Be involved in your childs education, taking an interest from the beginning and do not rely on the school to do it all. Your imput will greatly affect the satisfaction of the childs school experience.

These are two things I had to learn the hard way and my children suffered because I was clueless. Jeesh! Im still clueless on a lot of things! Just a gram ma mas two cents worth.

I cut and pasted as this does a better explaining job than I could. My parents moved out of N.Y.C. because of the conditions in schools (at the time) so I could get a good education (which I did) but I did get bullied (probably because of my disability) and we did consider private school but it was quite unaffordable. Ultimately I made do and I think the educational results were good. The manner in which some of the other students approached me was not and I myself at the time as a young person was not happy with some of their ideology (such as towards drugs and alcohol) but did not know how to approach it. I felt at the time that the school did not take enough action as regards what was proper behavior and I still do. I did learn a sense of self respect and some other students did not though.

"Charter schools are elementary or secondary schools in the United States that receive public money but have been freed from some of the rules, regulations, and statutes that apply to other public schools in exchange for some type of accountability for producing certain results, which are set forth in each school's charter.

While charter schools provide an alternative to other public schools, they are part of the public education system and are not allowed to charge tuition. Where space at a charter school is limited, admission is frequently allocated by lottery based admissions. Some charter schools provide a curriculum that specializes in a certain field-- e.g. arts, mathematics, etc. Others attempt to provide a better and more efficient general education than nearby public schools.

Some charter schools are founded by teachers, parents, or activists who feel restricted by traditional public schools. State-run charters (schools not affiliated with local school districts) are often established by non-profit groups, universities, and some government entities.Additionally, school districts sometimes permit corporations to open chains of for-profit charter schools."

we're thinking about private school. i just don't know how that would work if greg does resign with the military. i really don't want to do home schooling. i've known plenty of kids who did the homeschooling and some were EXTREMELY socially awkward. they didn't talk to anyone except themselves (it was a sister and 2 brothers and then 2 more sisters). and the refused to take part in activities with anybody that were outsiders.

what exactly is charter school? i've never heard of that.

I would say Private is best again if you can afford it! But every1 is right there may be bullies there too!! I went to public and i HATED it! It was the 4 most miserable years of my life i could not wait to get the heck out of that place!! My family is against home schooling which i am too i just dont feel its the best environment for the child!! Just my opinion i know there are some advantages to being home schooled but from what i have seen b4 it was not!! I like this idea of charter school every1 is talking about dont know much about it but i know they are smaller schools!!

Depends on the private school. My daughter was bullied in a private school and I didn't feel like we got much support because the teachers said they never saw the bullying. This went on all through middle school!
Also, my daughter needed extra help and didn't get much of that either so she struggled academically in school which didn't exactly help her self-esteem. She's doing much better since we switched her to a charter school.

I would highly recommend Private School for those who can afford it.

I have had to go through public school and it was as hard as anything on me. In my experience pretty much all of the students nowadays have no respect for each other and it was showed to me by being bullied each and every day. Most of the Faulty, Staff and Teachers also showed no respect for me and they didn't even want to do anything about the bullies. So it ended up in me not wanting to ever go to school and I have ended up in the hospital from all of the stress that school gave me. :(

In the end I was Home schooled for awhile, but the teacher that they gave me only taught 2nd Graders and I was in 10th Grade. After that I have been placed in a smaller "private" school and I have loved it. That school didn't allow bullying of any kind and you were able to learn at your own pace. :)

So that is why I would highly recommend Private School for those who can afford it.

Funny that the last two commenters mentioned "bullying".  I am shamelessly advertising a journal I posted last night called "When the BULLY is a COP".

And, Yes, this happened in the Public School System.  Yet, I still voted for the public schools at this time....  We'll see what comes of my dau's saga.

My son has been in the public school for 5 years and it really *****.  The anti-bully regulations are a joke and don't work.  We live in a very wealthy school district and the education is supposed to be the best.  But, if your child does not fit into their mold or if you do not do everything they want then forget about getting a good education.  I am totally getting tired of the public school system.  We just had a meeting on Friday and the only thing that ever matters is that your child does extremely well on the state testing and helps to bring in more money.  We also just recently got a new test that is being done to provide categories for each child.  They take a test to see where their emotional and social intelligence is compared to all the rest of the children.  What a joke.  Some children can not sit for a lengthy test and other can get through them with no problems at all.  Every child is different and it seems to me that the public school system has forgotten this.  I am sorry if I offend anyone that is a teacher in the public school.  This is not my intention.  Teachers, unfortunately, do not have much of a choice in how they can teach.  It is all regulated by the district itself.  So, being a teacher in this day in age; would be very difficult.  Their are really good teachers out there and they are being controlled by what the district and Education department wants and needs in order for them to be successful not the child.

So, homeschooling is a good option since you regulate what your child sees and is learning.  But, you still get the quality of education and sometimes more.  They learn at their own pace and still have the teacher support over the internet or at their home that the child may need.  Private school is great as long as your child is a fast learner and does not have a learning disability of any kind.

I'd still say public school is still worthwhile (and more affordable as well) and if you have concerns let the school authorities know. In N.Y.C. they put are phasing in regulations requiring school uniforms but many schools had dress codes beforehand including the junior high school where my mother taught when she lived here. As well they have prohibited the use of cellphones and just put in anti-bullying regulations. Whatever people think of any of these regulations (everyone is entitled to their own opinions) the point is that they started because concerned parents spoke up so why not do so?

Stuff happens even in private schools. Just be aware of that. My daughter was bullied all through middle school by a group of girls and it was a private school. She's now in a charter school and doing better. You have to remember that some kids who go to private schools because they were kicked out of public school or their parents put them in a private school hoping to straighten them up.
I'm going to attempt public school for my son this fall so that he can receive the Speech and OT therapy he needs. I'm really considering homeschooling overall, though. I don't want him picking up the junk that's out there with other kids, like language, etc. and I don't always agree with the curriculum. I'm going to play things by ear and see how it goes. I think middle school is the worst!

Might I add that public or private or home school also depends on the school opportunities where you live...

In some areas of the country, you can home school and get AWESOME classes for your high school students by teachers (physics, science, you name it).

In other areas of the country, I wouldn't send my child(ren) to the public school(s) if my life depended on it and I'd either send them to private school or home school if I couldn't afford private school.

Good question!  If you read my LONG journal that I just posted late last night, you'd think I'd NEVER send my child to public school again.  My 14-year old dau was bullied by a POLICE OFFICER!

BUT, I have always believed in the public school system.

While I say that, I home-schooled my two oldest two children for kindergarten, first and part of 2nd grades.  I taught them to read using PURE phonics (schools these days do NOT even know what that is any more!) and I taught them the basics of math.  I must have done something right, because my son graduated last year from high school having had to be sent to the local college campus for math - he completed Calculus 3.  My dau is in 8th grade, taking 10th grade math.  Both of them read WAY above age/grade level.

I don't know HOW to vote....!  I can argue for all three, but at this point I think I'll still have to say public school BUT STAY INVOLVED (read my journal!!!).  It depends on YOUR family and YOUR goals for YOUR children.  WILL they be attending a private college?  That is rare, but the culture shock of going from a small private school to a public/state college might be overwhelming...
