natural herbs for menopause

Has anyone tried natural herbs for the symptons of menopause?
My doc advised black cohosh because I can't take the estrogen.

Charliegirl: So glad to hear that your doctor is open to alternative remedies. There are so many that are very closed-minded, and refuse to even consider alternatives to HRT or other prescription meds. Please keep us updated!

SassyLassie: You are so right about taking progestins to "oppose" any estrogens that we are taking - especially for those of us who haven't had a hysterectomy.

Back in the '70s they found that women who were taking Premarin were having a huge increase in endometrial and uterine cancer, which is why they introduced Prempro, a combination of estrogens plus progestins that would help prevent this from happening.

And this can happen regardless of whether we are taking "natural" or "synthetic" estrogens. They both cause similar effects on our bodies.

I've done a lot of reading since I had my own adventures with Premarin, and if I had to do it over again, I would definitely try the natural, herbal approach before I ever considered using any hormones, natural or otherwise.

I have heard great things about Black Cohosh.
Another thing you might want to try is "bio-identical" hormonal cream. There are some great Progesterone creams on the market that can help with menopausal symptoms, it is always good to take a natural progesterone along with estrogen, even if the estrogen is from a natural source.

Thank you Lisa for your info. I did ask my doc to suggest something and he told me about the black cohosh. I also asked about antidrepressants and he commented about side effects and did'nt seem to agree with them in this case. I just started taking the black cohosh and so far so good. I wish you luck.

Hi Charliegirl!

There are definitely natural / herbal products that really do work for many of us. I started using an herbal product called Wisdom Menopause Formula last winter when I couldn't handle the side effects that Premarin was causing me, and it has worked wonders - way better than I expected. I know at least six other women who are taking it, and I haven't heard anything but praise.

But if you can't take estrogen, please BE SURE to check with your doctor before you take any menopause supplement. Some herbal products (like soy isoflavones, red clover and some Chinese herbs) can act like estrogen in our bodies, and may not be safe for women who need to avoid estrogen.

Also, there are some antidepressants that are supposed to be helpful for those of us who can't take the hormones, so that might be another option you could ask your doctor about.

Take care!

Lisa

Hi,

I have been taking Menersa for about 5 months and I feel like my old self.  It took about 5 or 6 weeks before I felt anything but woke up one morning and said, "Wow!  I feel happy and I don't hurt!"  One of the ingredients is black cohosh.  I won't take estrogen supplements and my doc suggested Estroven, but I liked the sound of the Menersa better and it is an amazing herbal remedy...for me at least.

I wish you much success!  I know how difficult this time can be.

Best,
Kesta
