Big lump on bottom of scrotum

I have a big lump on the very bottom of my scrotum, it appeared once before but went away, but it has come back overnight and it is about the size of a long golf ball.  It is VERY painful.  What do you think it is? Should I put black sav on it?

...my boyfriend just had something similar to that, a week ago. It was a boil... and at first it felt like pea sized nodule just at the base of his scrotum. Then, the nodule grew to a about the size of a marble. And, of course, the more it grew the more painful it felt. He went to a doctor... had it lanced.. and, he's now on antibiotic medication and having frequent bath tub soaks.

Skip the remedies and ointments and let a doctor take care of it.

It might be a variocele.  Here is from another website:

____________________

A varicocele forms in the scrotum when valves inside the veins along the spermatic cord prevent blood from flowing properly. This causes the blood to back up, leading to swelling and widening of the veins. (This is essentially the same process that leads to varicose veins, which are common in the legs.)

Varicoceles usually develop slowly. They are more common in men ages 15 - 25 and are most often seen on the left side of the scrotum. Varicoceles are often the cause of infertility in men.

The sudden appearance of a varicocele in an older man may be caused by a kidney tumor, which can block blood flow to a vein. This is more common on the left side than the right.

Don't treat it with salve, go see your doctor.  There are treatments for varioceles and they don't sound very complicated.
