Destroying receptors can stop disease?

I'm very interested whether you can simply destroy cell receptors with custom inhibitors (or other) and stop a variety of diseases (ex: HIV).  I've been told by some doctors that the receptor is unnecessary and could be disabled so why can't/hasn't this been done to stop many diseases?
