OLD Man needing to get in shape

I am 58 year old male 6"6" tall and weigh 280LBS.

I have had 1 mild stroke, 3 lower back surgeries. a double hernia, 1 knee surgery to fix meniscus, knee slide and remove arthritis, aortic aneurism repaired, 4 surgical hernia repairs with the last 2 with mesh.  I have been walking 1.5 to 2 miles per day and riding a bike for 20 to 25 minutes per day 4 to 5 days per week for 45 days but have gained 5 lbs.

Any suggestions on workout schedule to lose weight?

The joints ache the arthritis has started, back and knee, the doctors have not let me play basketball since they rebuilt the knee nor am I allowed to play golf. I talked with the surgeon office who finally fixed the stomach last week and the physical limitations make me feel OLD!

It hard going from being competitive in most sports to watching from the sidelines.

Try not to be discouraged. It's not uncommon for weight to go up and down. When you exercise you're putting on muscle which weighs more that fat. That could be what's happening.
Be very proud of yourself for living a healthy life style. That's great!
I did get a chuckle out of the title of your post. You're not an old man at only 58.

Thanks for the feedback I will have to start using the calorie counter, my eating habits changed since I relocated to FL.  I thought cutting back on my alcohol would offset 3 meals a day.  I do like meat but eat very little bread I drink mainly water and 3 cups of coffee per day.  When you go from 0 exercise to what i am I doing know I did not think about the change in diet in a negative way but I must watch the amount I eat.

Do you have access to a spinning class?  Those can really melt the weight.

Basically, you're intaking more calories than you're burning, or you wouldn't have gained weight.  So it's a matter of going to Weight Watchers and using their methods (I recommend in particular their portion-control comments) or increasing your exercise, or both things together.

Hi Stew, Well the walking should be doing some good, are you brisk walking, if you can get in swimming that would also be a big help, but doing the cycling and putting on weight? think somebody is cheating and over eating.
You can do a weight tracker here on site, that might help, as you start to lose, you can watch yourself getting to your on goal, set by you.
I'm a bit older than you and find the cabbage diet quite good, you only need to get your head around it for 7 days, and it works, if you stick to it, just google the cabbage diet.
Good Luck
