Red irritation on penis

So here’s the lowdown..This started roughly 2 years ago when I was in a relationship. I noticed sort of a large rash on the head and shaft of my penis, which was painless. I panicked and went to urgent care, they confirmed it wasn’t an STD and claimed it was balanitis, which I was skeptical about because my hygiene is top notch. I left there and still wanted to be tested for STD’s, so I did exactly that. After my results came back, everything was negative.

Let me start out by saying I was clueless about topical steroids and the adverse effects they can have on your body at this point. The urgent care physician prescribed me ‘Clotrimazole USP 1%’, which initially cleared up the rash. This same rash just seemed to keep recurring, so I kept applying the topical steroid cream. Needless to say, this has been going on for about 2 years now. I would apply the cream liberally whenever the rash would appear. I was never satisfied with the results, so I would go back to urgent care and they would prescribe me with different topical steroids, such as; ‘Clotrimazole and Betamethasone Dipropionate Cream USP’, ’Econazole Nitrate Cream 1%’, ‘Ketoconazole Cream 2%’, and lastly ‘Desonide Cream 0.05.’ The last two I mentioned were prescribed by a dermatologist. During the dermatologist visit, I wasn’t showing any signs or symptoms due to using the Clotrimazole Cream on and off.

Here I am now, after doing thorough research over the last couple months, I stopped applying topical steroids because I’m afraid I may have thinned the skin on my penis head/shaft. I can still have sex without any discomfort, but I get these shiny raised what almost appear as scars on my penis head & shaft. I cut out sex and masterbation for over a month, which was only about a month ago and everything pretty much cleared up. Typically when I would get a shower, the red marks would be very prevalent, but they weren’t showing after I took the month break. Just recently I decided to have unprotected sex with my girlfriend, I it was great, no signs of redness. What do I do..continue having sex because I thought everything was kosher. After about the second or third time of having sex, the marks were back and they appear to be the same as the have in the past. I have small shiny pink circular marks on the shaft and more linear pink marks on the head. The marks are raised and somewhat scaly to the touch. I’m almost thinking it’s scarring that I irritate while having intercourse, but I really don’t know.

I know there are lots of you on here with somewhat similar symptoms, so please share any insight or advice you may have for me.

Thanks,
Joe
