Sibling says family member must stay at hospital after they are dropped off

Hi all - I'm taking my sibling to the hospital in a few weeks for a hernia operation. They said that the hospital said that I must stay at the hospital until after their surgery is complete. I've never heard of this policy before, I thought maybe my sibling is saying this because they have severe anxiety at times. Before I question them about it, I wanted to ask if anyone has ever heard of such a policy? Thank you for any feedback.

That's not unusual. Theses surgeries, most of the time, are laparoscopic. Your sibling having the procedure can't drive and they don't want to risk someone not being available when they need them to help their family member home. The procedure usually takes 30 to 45  minutes to complete, so is short and family often joins in recovery as they come out of anethesia.  Covid may have changed things a little. But it is a pretty common practice.

Thank you for the reply. My understanding is that it she is staying overnight, but that I needed to stay for a certain amount of time after I dropped her off, but that I didnt need to stay overnight. So I'm confused as to why... maybe I have my info wrong, I will check. I appreciate your feedback.
Double check. About 70 percent of hernia surgeries are outpatient. How old is your sibling?
