Sore throat from licking the back of my throat

I have a horrible and strange habit of licking the back of my throat and I'm wondering if its the cause of my constant sore throat. When I say licking the back of my throat, I mean that I can feel as far as the very back of my tonsils and far up and down the back of my throat. There is always a lot of mucus in the back of my throat and I almost feel the need to get rid of it with my tongue. Is it normal to always have loads of mucus back there? Or is it possibly caused by sinus problems or allergies or some other post nasal drip? And is it possible that mucus is the cause of my sore throat?

I'm finding it very difficult to break this habit, but I guess that if i knew that it would stop my throat from feeling sore I would have a real reason to stop. Thanks in advance.
