Smells triggering migraines and inner ear/dizzyness

I am normally a healthy 60 yr old woman;walk 3 mi. every day; do not smoke or drink; good BP and blood tests good; recently since Oct. smells (fragrances, candles, gas or petro products) produce instant migraines and inner ear fullness/dizzyness/equalibrium problems.  Neuro Dr. put me on a 5 day prednesone regime (10mg starting w/5 first day, 4 sec day and so on).  still have headache and dizzyness.  Also use Imitrex nasal puffs which work for a while but as soon as I'm in contact w/someone who has perfume on...bam another headache!  I have been reading online about the condition of Dysosmia. What can be done? I had a CT scan several yrs back with no problems identified. Do you suggest continuing to see my Neuro or do I go to an ENT Doc?...can't continue on this path of destruction! thanks

Hi,

You can continue with the netipot to clear the sinuses. Steroid nasal spray is helpful in acute cases but if used for prolonged period of time can result in thickening of nasal mucus membrane. So please be careful.

Enjoy your vacation!

Thank you for your response;  I forgot to mention previously that I have been using the Neti pot several X daily.  Do you think a steroid nasal spray would help also?  I'm leaving today for a wks vacation; when I return I will make a ENT apt.  thanks

Hi,

Migraines can be triggered by smells and these types of migraines are known as odor induced migraines. The odors range from perfumes, fumes, vapors, curry and chilly.
The best way to avoid migraines is avoidance of triggers that induce migraines.
I would still suggest you to consult an ENT specialist about it as infected nasal sinuses, nasal polyps, hypertrophic rhinitis and deviated septum can cause dysosmia.
Meanwhile you can try alternate therapies like hypnotherapy, yoga, and biofeedback.

Thanks
