Be careful with codeine if you have TMJ (sometimes called lock-jaw) as it can make the TMJ worse.
Hi
You should discuss with your doctor about the diverse abortive medications available to terminate an attack as soon as the symptoms begin. These include Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin, others) or aspirin to help relieve mild migraines and combinations of acetaminophen, aspirin and caffeine specifically meant for moderate migraine attacks (Excedrin Migraine).
The drug of choice however are triptans such as Sumatriptan (Imitrex), rizatriptan (Maxalt), naratriptan (Amerge), zolmitriptan (Zomig), almotriptan (Axert), frovatriptan (Frova) and eletriptan (Relpax).
You may need to try which of these medications works best for you, in consultation with your doctor.
Take care
I use Midrin. I take two at the onset of a headache, then another after an hour.
Ask your doctor for some samples of what is called "abortive" medication. This includes drugs such as Imitrex and Relpax which are drugs from the "triptan" family. You only take them when you start to get an attack. They can be expensive but they're a real life saver if you're down and out from a migraine attack. Your doctor should be able to give you samples of various triptans and then you can get a prescription of the one that works best for you to have on hand in case of emergencies.
excedrin migraine is the only thing that will knock mine out =)
