For general medicine and women's health issues, I prefer my female PCP. I was pleasantly surprised at having a male neurologist. He experiences migraines himself, so I feel assured that he at least has fellow feeling. Right now, we are both rather frustrated that nothing has worked very well at preventing all these migraines.
I chose both are helpful. My neuro is male, and he (now) listens to me and pays attention to what I say and is most helpful. I think I've grown into him now that I'm 21. I was 15 when I started seeing him, and at that point he didn't really know how to deal with me.
However, my psych, who works with my neuro about 1/2 the time, is female, and she too is really understanding. She goes out of her way to do research on migraines for me, and is just plain awesome.
Well... I only said male doctors because both my GP and my current neurologist are male, hehe. But... actually... there probably isn't really a difference now that I think about it because one of the neurologists I had was male and he was the worst doctor I have ever seen in my ENTIRE life (2 neurologists before the one i am currently seeing) ... I hate him soooo much, I think he shouldn't be a neurologist or a doctor, he is HORRIBLE!! And, the neurologist before that was female and she was reallllly nice and lovely but not helpful. My favourite neurologist I've ever had in emergency was female now that I think about it and my favourite doctor I've ever had in emergency was female too... although I can think of two other doctors I've had in emergency that were male who were really nice and comforting and helpful too... and one male nurse who is my favourite in emergency... although I can remember one female nurse who was really wonderful too... but, in general I like male nurses more than female nurses, they are usually nicer and more understanding I find. And, as far as GPs go, like regular family doctors, I've had the best success with male doctors, but that is only because I've had one female GP and my current male GP and my female GP wasn't so helpful and put me on medications that really messed up my life when I was a teenager and my current GP who is male is just about the most wonderful GP you could ask for... even though sometimes I leave his office crying too or feeling fed up, I think that's just more because I have a chronic medical condition and I know he tries his best and is wonderful.
So... I dunno. I know that in general women doctors seem to be the most caring... but I have actually gotten the most help from some of the male doctors I've had. BUT, in emergency, some of my favourite doctors are the female doctors. But, also in emergency, most of my favourite nurses are male.
But... really... I don't know... I think it almost ties...
But I see what you mean when you say that male doctors can sometimes brush you off, I have found that too and not so much with women... but then most of the women doctors other than the ones in emergency I've had so far, even though they are really caring and wonderful people, haven't actually personally been of much help... where as the few male doctors who don't brush me off have been of the most help. I think maybe it's just luck... I hope it is just luck anyway... because men and women should be both as helpful... I wonder if there is a reason, if it is more than just luck, that some male doctors have such a bad bed side manner.... maybe a good bed side manner it is something they don't teach in medical school? Hmm it's interesting.
