Mirena strings too long?

Hi all, hope im posting in the right place. So i got my mirena in about 3 weeks ago...haven't had much bleeding and all seems to be fine. But my partner and I tried to hve sex (when the bleeding had stopped) and he said he could feel it and it was very uncomfortable so we had to stop. I didnt believe him and i went to the bathroom and checked myself. The strings seem very low to the point i think they would even get caught on a tampon. I am wondering do these soften or curl? If so when will it happen and until then would wearing a condom help with not feeling them or should i stay away from sex. Or do i need to go back to my GP. Im 28 and have never had childern if that makes a difference.
Thanks for reading, hope you can help :)
