Miscarriage or odd period?

OK, long set- up... I take the pill, but last month I took some late. It wasnt unusual for me to not have periods for about 6 months before i was on the pill. When it was the fourth week of pills, I had typical period symptoms (cramps, loss of appetite, breast tenderness etc) but no period.  I started taking pregnancy tests the second day after my missed period, used first morning urine for nine days in a row.  They were all negative, so i thought that my missed period was just becasue i used to not have them.  I started the pill again, and i started my period the day i was supposed to, but on the second day, i passed a long, stringy, grey-ish piece of tissue that i have never seen anything like before! It was kind of firm in the center with dark blood around it... TMI, sry...  Im really worried it was a miscarriage, so i took another pregnancy test right away because the levels of hgc stay for awhile even after a m/c.. still negative. So.. would starting birth control again have caused a miscarriage? and if so, why did the tissue come four weeks AFTER i started taking the pill again, with my normal period? Could it be extra lining or something from the missed period?

I've also had this experience-twice now. The first time I was on the pill and missed a few doses and was "unprotected"-continued using the pill and two months later I got my period and it was spotty and then I passed what I had at first thought was a clot, but I thought it was much too big to be just a clot so I looked further and ended up fainting when I realized that it was more than likely and MC....
The second time Hubby and I had a breakage and since we're waiting til my health issues get sorted out before trying to have a baby I took the plan B pill within the 72 hours as directed.. spotty period (it was brown rather than the usual dark red btw) and then stuck to my tampon was again what I thought was a clot, but it was a smaller version of what I had seen the last time.
Had an MC at 2 months in between these two events in the hospital-didn't get to see this and frankly didn't really wish to, so I don't have that to use as a comparison.

I would go to the doctor to give yourself peace of mind.  I would drive myself crazy having the worst thoughts in my head.  The best thing to do is be seen.
