My mood is literally based on the weather

It's not the greatest problem in the world, but I decided to join this website to maybe learn some things about myself that I don't know about.

I have known this for a long time, but have had no idea why: my mood is quite literally based on the outside weather.

When it is sunny and bright, I am upbeat, hopeful, and truly feel great and good.
When it is raining or just cloudy, and/or dark, I feel quite down and depressed, and pretty negative.
At night (when it is fully dark) I feel normal, neither upbeat or downtrodden (I guess at night there isn't really any visible weather).

Why is this? My 'problem' isn't like other people, in the sense I know almost everyone likes and feels good in sunshine - with me, I will feel EXTREMELY good in good weather and often EXTREMELY bad in bad weather!

In my experience this kind of mood-weather link is relatively common in folks with soft bipolar or bipolar spectrum conditions. It is the reason that so much of the work of helping folks with cycling mood conditions (meaning mood that varies between up and down) is focused on trying to get regular and consistent light exposure. Since it is summer there may not be much to do, but if I were you I would strongly consider buying a therapeutic bright light. And also you might want to consider tracking your mood in some way, especially as you start to use the light to support your moods.

It sounds like a chemical/ hormonal thing.

It sounds a little like SAD (seasonal affective disorder) but slightly different.  If you research that you may find some more answers.

The doctor has informative responses so I expect he will have some ideas.
