episode

a member of my family
was at a very intense 9 day course ,they had very meager vegan meals ,a lot of silence while eating.walking ,and listening to emotional situations,etc....she didn't sleep hardly at all ,ate very little and fainted on the 7 th day.
she then became very confused and speaking nonsense and things from the course..totally a different person .
then after being checked at emergency and after some sedation and rest she seems to be back to normal ...question is that a worry for bipolar as it was like a physcotic episode

I agree with Jaquta, it will be interesting to read the expert's response... where is that fellow....

But seriously, I would have to say that the answer to your question depends on whether or not there is any evidence of mood cycling before this.

Your family member might want to read up about cyclothymia and hypomania which are milder forms of mood cycling. If you have access to a library I like the book "Why Am I Still Depressed?" for its decent descriptions of the bipolar spectrum.

If none of this rings a bell then I would say no reason to worry, but perhaps be more careful in the future.

If she has concerns she should talk to her doctor.  I personally would put it down to the stress of the situation (lack of sleep, poor nutrition, emotional stress, etc).
I think that similar stressors should be approached with caution for future reference.

Not sure whether those symptoms would indicate that someone is predisposed to bipolar though.

It will be interesting to read the expert's response.
