3 or 4 wheel scooter?

Hi Everyone

I am going to pick out a scooter this week and i was wondering if there was much difference in a 3 0r 4 wheeler?

Some kind forum friends commented on Pride and that is what i am going to look at.

But now I saw they make them 3 or 4 wheels.  Is one easier to use than the other??  Does anyone know?

Thank you for any help                                                              Linda

I remember looking at the Legend when Loretta got her first Go-Go.  It was a very nice machine, but would have been difficult for us to transport.  I think it had turn signals, but no stereo. ;)

Hi,
I read ur post. My dad is an above the knee amputee due to complications from diabetes.  He has 3 scooters and I asked him what he thought of each, thought it might help you, just to add info to your decision, although im not sure from your post if you've decided or not.  Well I copied what he said and will paste here anyway for you to read:
PS - He is not a small man.

have never had a four wheel scooter. I have a Pride (Legend), a Golden II (This is from a VA - I do not own it) and a Star (Scooter Store).

The Star is a small one, with much smaller wheels (this is the first one I bought) - not recommended for every day use. Seems like the scooter store puts a new one out every couple months, all the same scooter, but with a different name. This served it's purpose until I got the Legend.

The :Legend is a much bigger and better (cost more) scooter and is the one I use every day here. Get's me there and get's me back. I am well pleased with it. (seen in various stores in the $2000-$2500 range. I got mine thru the Internet for $1600. with free shipping and no tax).

The Champion II is the one I got from the VA. (Retired Navy, disabilities thru the Navy, etc). I also got a lift for the back of the Van. I use this on all my trips to stores, etc.

Never having a 4 wheel I can;;t way anything about this. I am pleased with the performance I get out of the 3 wheelers I have.

Q- Monty offered some bizarre things behind that door, a spinal tap would have fit right in with the Venezuelan coffee hauling donkey!  Glad to see you around.  - L

Linda,
We should always remember there is often a door #3 that we don't even know about.  I'm glad you figured which one will be best for you.

be well, be mobile

I looked at a Golden Liteway            Husband liked it for me because it has 2

the wheels in the front close together and of course 2 in the back. Is t weight 104 lbs

and come apart easily. Of  cource I tested it on turtle speed.  lol  I don't need

Life in the Fast Lane.  I don;t mind being a turtle Waiting for the paper work to go thru.

You made me laugh about the doors #1 or #2  thanks for the  laugh.Keep you posted.
Linda    (the turtle)  but i could be a rabbit  also   lol

So Linda, which did you pick - the scooter behind door #1 or door #2?  :-)

Whichever, I hope this improves the quality of your life.

Hi--I have the Pride GoGo 3 wheeler and it is great for me for the mall, large stores and outside on pavement.  I got that one because I am alone and have a car with a small trunk.  This scooter comes apart and I can out it in the trunk except the seat which I have to put in the back seat.  It is really no good for grass or dirt, no traction and tippy.  If I go out for errands it is a real energy zapper to take it apart and put it together more than twice.
If I ever get another one it will have large wheels that can go anywhere but first I have to work on trading my car and I think it will be an electric chair.  Most insurances won't pay for a scooter.

The 3 wheelers are the ones with the tip-over problems.

Linda, my late wife had two Pride scooters, both 3-wheel.  We figured that she'd need a van with a lift if she got anything bigger.  The 4-wheelers are obviously more stable, but they usually can't turn as sharply, so some tight turns might not be possible.  Look at the capacity if you're a larger person, but with any of them, consider where you will be using it, and whether or not you'll need to transport it frequently.  We picked the Pride Go-Go for its portability, but the 2nd time around we got the Go-Go Elite Traveller Plus HD, which is slightly larger, and has a larger weight capacity and battery.  Having had the old one for quite a few years, I can say that the new one was much improved, in my opinion.

Oh, Loretta did put Harley-Davidson stickers on the sides of the battery cover on the first one.

Q - are you saying that we should strap ourselves in and wear helmets on either type of scooter? If not a 3-wheel and not  a 4-wheel, how many wheels do we need to be safe? - L

Another thing to consider is the safety issue.  The four-wheeled power chairs and scooters are much more stable.  The three wheelers have a tendency to roll over if the terrain is uneven or if you accidentally miss the ramp.  My dad looked at this problem through AARP, and the incidence of injuries from falling over on the four wheelers was unacceptably high.  This was about 5 years ago.

Just guessing here, but does it have to do with the weight of the machine as well?  If you want to take it with you in the car, that is another factor to consider.

I hope you get some answers.
