CSF inflammation via o-bands & effects?

question:
when one has a CSF inflammation such as o-bands, lets say for the sake of this question, o-bands greater than 5. (this gets us past the oh, everyone has them statemetns by DUMB neuros). and the person in question has neuro symptoms.

what kind of symptoms could a person have with a CSF inflammtaion regarding o-bands? as Quix mentioned, this is brain chemistry.

i would say there is much truth to what you say. sad. i can remember many years ago when it wasn't so much like today with doctors worried about the bean counters looking over their shoulder, job security for following rules to ration health care, too many false egos these days and on and on.

boy, when your body doesn't feel well, and we all do the tough it out as much as we can, and over time the symptoms are still there over time, adn you go see a docotr who slam dunks you?

i know neuro illnesses are hard to diagnosis, but gee, comon.

oh well, won't waste your time with my silly rants.

thanks for chiming in

Hey there Quix,

thanks much for the edcuation. very good info.  things start to narrow down a bit once the mimics are ruled out and the mri & lp is positive i see.

when i hear "inflammation" associated with the o-bands in the csf...my prior thinking was connecting dots to "inflammation" && "some neuor symptoms". my thinking was a bit flawed i see.

the o-bands are there [not causing] but are a [result] of inflammation [somewheres] in one's csf/cns.

i wnant myself and others here to be clear on this so our providers (for whatever reason) do not discount this and lead patients astray who have an illness needing nelp.

great to see ya up and about...thanks!

Hi, there!  The O-Bands that are unique to the CSF do not "cause" symptoms.  They are the result of sites of immunologic inflammation (where antibodies are attacking nerve tissue) somewhere in the central nervous system.  The cloned colonies (clonal)activated B-cell lymphocytes are over-producing antibodies that just hang around and can be measured and stained and given position numbers.

A person with many O-Bands can be completely without symptoms - though the symptoms will often soon appear.   IE.  MRI done for head trauma with lesions suggestive of MS, but no neuro symptoms yet.  LP reveals O-Bands.

"how many can be reliably ruled out with a blood test?

Multiple sclerosis - nope

Devic's disease - about 80% of the time the NMO-antibody is positive, also pattern of disease is suggestive.

Systemic lupus erythematosus - there are usually blood indicators, antibodies and markers of inflammation - but there is also sero-negative (no antibodies found in serum) Lupus

Neurosarcoidosis - No great blood test.  Often the ACE level and/or the serum cacium level will be elevated.

Subacute sclerosing panencephalitis - caused by the measles virus and invariably fatal.  Diagnosis made by measuring antibodies to measles in CSF and serum and by classic EEG pattern.  Measles always causes an encephalitis, but rarely SSPE.   (Anyone  want to stop immunizing?)

Subarachnoid haemorrhage (bleeding intto the space around the brain) diagnosed by LP and MRI or CT with Contrast.

Syphilis - Diagnosed with blood test

Primary central nervous system lymphoma - Diagnosed with cytology on LP - concentrating the cells in the CSF and examining them with a microscope

Sjögren's Disease - Diagnosed with triad of dry eyes, dry mouth, lip or salivery glad biospy and typical antibodies in the blood, but sero-negative cases occur.

Hi Its frustrating that the Doctors in the USA are taking really such a little time because of cost effect.  Also everyone looks only at one thing at the time.  I feel that the reason it takes soooo long to be diagnosed is because Nobody takes the time to put the pieces together.  They want a clear cut case.  They just don't want to take the time and energy to diagnose a complicated disease.  Love and Light Elie

of that list, how many can be crossed off this via blood test or another objective test?

so for folks dropping into this forum researching for themselves or others, it would stand to reason that a person with o-bands>2 in their CSF could very well be "causing" neurologikal symptoms. yes | no?

regardless if it is or isn't MS.

I wikied it - here's the results.

O-bands are associated with:

Multiple sclerosis
Devic's disease
Systemic lupus erythematosus
Neurosarcoidosis
Subacute sclerosing panencephalitis
Subarachnoid haemorrhage
Syphilis
Primary central nervous system lymphoma
Sjögren's Disease

There is no direct correlation of symptoms to o-bands. It could suggest a chronic or an acute illness since o-bands stay in the CSF.

That is this problem it depends on what disease is or has caused CSF inflammation. The simple answer and I am no doctor but from what I have researched would be neurological. There is a whole list of neurological diseases with CSF involvement. This is where Specialists come in.

Hey Alex. thanks. I'm aware of the things you stated.

what i'm trying to narrow down is that if a person has this "inflammation" what could one generalize as to some symtpoms that it could cause?

let's not think of a diagnosis, or relating to me, as i've been dx and been sorta diagnosed. depends on the VA version or the non-VA version.

let's say from a stand point that one has this csf inflammation, mimic tests have been done and ruled out. patient has this inflammation and a doctor dismisses it for whatever reason.

what symptoms could this inflammation cause?

O-bands mean inflammation. What is important for  a finding of MS is if you do not have any o-bands in the blood serum which is drawn at the same time as the LP.

The test is only a piece of the puzzle with your symptoms and other test results.

There are a whole host of diseases which could be determined by the CSF findings but not by the test itself.
