Concerns for daughter with mother having MS

Hi I am 42 years old and 8 years ago I got diagnosed with MS, I was the only one ever in my family to have gotten this disease! How likely is it that my daughter who is 22 now she will get it or will it skip generations and how many generations?

Hi and welcome to our little MS community,

I'm sorry to hear you've just been diagnosed but please don't worry that your children are now at risk of being diagnosed too, it's actually more common to be the only person in your family dx with MS. It's rare for MS to run in families, yes it does happen but it's not the norm to be multi generational, or to skip  generations like a lot of the inheritable or other autoimmune conditions.

Technically a first person relative only has 1-5% higher odds, which translates into being a 99-95% chance of not being diagnosed with MS, statistically the odds are negligible so try not to worry about something that will probably not happen to your daughter too! How are 'you' doing?

Hope that helps.....JJ
