I've had TMJ since I was 17; I'm 60 now. All I've ever used is a special retainer at night to relax my jaw. I had bad attacks as a teenager but it got better over time. Now a problem only when stressed out, although my jaw sometimes makes horrible cracking sounds.
thanks for the replies, I'm still having pain on the side of my face, teeth are sore, ear is tender, when I move my jaw it makes a grinding type noise at times, on both sides. But it always has done that??
when I saw the dentist last week, I wonder why he didn't check for TMJ...you would think he would go there before telling me to take some teeth out...maybe time to find a new dentist and get checked out.
I'm starting the new Rx the Neuro said to take.. will find out if it helps. I'm doing some TMJ mouth excercises in case it helps or incase that is the problem. It sure is confusing. This morning with this pain I felt like pulling my own teeth out..uuugggg
this pain has been happening almost everyday for 12 days now. T3s dont help the pain... only make me constipated and tired. I should have asked the Neuro for Pain meds for this...
that's what I always do...leave the appt and say I should have done this or said that or asked for this...auuughhh
sorry, I hate this pain and it's making me so frustrated. Right now I have a Sharp Pain under my Jaw... my bottom teeth are sore and these are not the teeth the dentist wanted to take out?? so I'm so confused of what is going on with my face pain??
if I find out I'll let you know..
bye for now

I have had TMJ all my life, and it can be quite painful, at times.
Especially if I yawn real wide, my jaw will ache for a while.
Mine is more on my left side of my jaw.
I can move my jaw to the left, and make a "popping noise" any time I wish.
I was told, when I was young kid (of 16), that eventually when I get "old", that my jaw will drop and there is a high probability that it will drop low enough that I will not be able to pop it back in place. A very scary scenario for a 16 yr old, huh.
Well, so far I have had nothing done to correct the problem, I just hope that guy was wrong.
My TMJ can be quite painful at times, and yes it's noisy, but that's about it.

Oh by the way, I read your other post. I wanted to add that since I had my teeth pulled, my jaw still hurts, the side of my tongue, in front of my ear etc...but I have no pain from the sight of where they pulled the actual teeth. So, whatever was causing that pain is still there. I'm not sure if that is normal or not since the teeth came out so easily. (they were very loose).
I still think you and I had a bout of TN, from the way it sounds. Don't get me wrong. It's a little better to deal with, but the pain is still there and present. Tender, just like you said in your other post, just not the throbbing , stabbing pain as before.
I have had my jaws lock up occasionally. I have seen a dental surgeon, back in the day, when it lock up for 2 weeks in a row, and my GP in Illinois couldn't figure out what to. They prescribed me valium, but it had no effect.
The dental surgeon said that the x-ray didn't show any bone defects in the joint or jaw, and it looked to him that I wasn't a teeth grinder, so he thought that it was either from the cartilage or muscle that was causing the locking. I don't have the classic popping noise when opening my mouth either.
Years later I still have this issue off and on. After I had my surgery to remove that cyst & left ovary in 2008, my jaws locked for several months from being tubed during surgery. It always happens on one side, and my doctors said it could be because of the neurological issues I have. They said that it isn't TMJ, but actual muscle spasms that are locking the joint. I'm very careful to warn my anesthesiologist about this issue before surgery, because it has happened before they could tube me.
Take Care
I'm not sure you can count me in, i do have TMJ though not at bad as i had it as a child and then again after i'd had my toncils out at 29. I cant say TMJ has anything to do with whats going on with me, and interesting coincidence perhaps.
Cheers.......JJ
TMJ can cause severe jaw pain, running all along the whole side of your face, up above your eyebrow, your sinus', and ear pain. If it is TMJ you should hear a clicking/popping noise when you open your mouth up & down and side to side. Headaches too as Dawn mentioned. Your dentist should be able to do a quick exam, and with a few questions determine if you have TMJ. Good luck, Dentists are a necessary evil IMHO!
