Eye pain

I have trigeminal neuralgia on the right and an MRI suspicious for MS. I'm currently in waiting mode for a second opinion. My left eye has really started hurting as of last night. I don't know if the TN is starting up on the left or something else is going on. My left eye is a "lazy eye" from childhood so my vision is blurry anyway in that eye. I was wondering, for those of you who have experienced optic neuritis, how bad was the pain? My mother had MS and this is how hers started, so I guess I'm a little paranoid. Motrin takes the edge off some, but it starts up again as soon as the Motrin wears off. Thanks.

Hi, ON is what led to my diagnosis and I've had it in both eyes and am still recovering. With the first attack (right eye) I had no pain whatsoever, just a rapid loss of vision to the point of total blindness in the eye. That was six months ago and the vision still hasn't totally returned. With the second attack (left eye) I had a lot of dull, aching pain in the eye and the surrounding area. That lasted around two days before the vision loss set in but I recovered fairly quickly (within a month or so) The vision in that eye isn't so bad but it fogs right over all the time and I can no longer distinguish colours; It's different for everybody but I think the pain usually disappears once the vision loss starts and I understand most people recover well. Hope this helps! Oh one other point is that eyeball pain can be a symptom of MS in itself, according to my neuro. All the best, Zoe

Hi Monnie,

I have ON. It is what led to me being diagnosed with MS.  The pain wasn't severe for me, just noticeable.  It sort of felt like my eye was bruised when I moved it.   Now it comes and goes.  Good luck to you, I really hope it isn't MS for you.

Monnie, fortunately I have no personal experience with either TN or ON, but several folks here know that pain first hand.  I trust one of them will be along shortly to help with your question.
