Is it safe to have a flu shot while having a relapse?

I am not officially diagnosed, however, it's looking increasingly likely.

Question: I  have been trying to get a flu shot in for weeks (it's mid-winter here) but have been haivng an 'attack". Is it safe to have a flu shot if one is having a relapse?

The forum is addictive.

Yes, yes, no Nasal spray vaccine.  ONLY the injection.

Hi, Mary!  Thanks for helping hold down the fort.

I couldn't hear Quix cause I was talking myself.

(And she said she was going to take a nap anyway :)

A flu shot is NOT a live virus and you will be fine getting one.  You would be in more trouble if you actually avoided the vaccine and got the flu.  A fever would increase symptoms and the flu itself could send your immune system into hyperdrive and an exacerbation.

DO NOT get a nasal vaccine EVER if you are diagnosed with MS as this is a live vaccine.

Enjoy your cool weather.  I'm missing it here.

However, you should not have any vaccine within about 2 weeks of steroids.  This is because the steroids will likely prevent your immune system from making protective antibodies from the vaccine and you will not be protected.

Yes, it is.  The small reaction and temporary symptoms you might have from the vaccine are preferable to the potential devastation of a bout with the flu.  Here it was recommended that we get both the seasonal flu vaccine and the H1N1.
