How long will the MS Hug last? I have a funny sensation from my breasts to my waist, I feel like my torso is not on my body.

Please need to know will I feel my breast and waist again??

Fig - No the Hug can be just partly around.  However, some neuros can get really "rule-bound" and not accept anything except the classic findings and symptoms.  It is really hard to get anywhere wiht a doc that has so little repect for the variability of life (and MS).

I have a question about MS hug. Does the squeezing sensation have to go all the way around the torso to technically be considered MS hug? Just wondering, because several times over the past year and a half, I have had a horrible squeezing pressure that extends from the sides of my ribcage and goes all the way across the front. It's right about at the level of my bra or sometimes just below. I sometimes get numbness all the way across my back, at about the same level, but not always the same time as the "hug" the pain can be excruciating and many times brings me to tears. Lasts anywhere from 45min. to 2.5 hrs.
I have been to the ER a couple of times thinking heart attack, but told it was chest wall pain.
I guess the reason I ask, my neuro asked me if the pressure goes all the way around, but then didn't comment one way or the other as to whether he thinks it's MS Hug or not. So I'm wondering if he is concerned that I have MS hug, or if he discounted it because I only get it across the front. I guess I should have asked him, but really didn't think to at the time.

Mine lasted several weeks and was relieved with 5 days of Solumedrol.

Like jensquitar said, it is very different for everyone.

I have parasthesia in my torso area covering several dermatome areas.  Sensation never comes back.  Yours may be completely different though.

My Hug is like a wide rubberband that goes around me from my shoulder area down to my waist.  It is extremely painful squeeze and at times becomes so intense that it causes me to double over.  Mine last anywhere from hours to a day or two with varying levels of intensity.  I will have periods where the Hug will come and go for a couple of weeks and then I won't experience it for a while.

Do you have any medicine to help with spasms?

Hang in there

Starting in early Nov. 2009, I had numbness in my entire body (from ribcage to toes) and extreme tightness just under my breasts.  It felt like I had a tight band around me with a big knot tied under my left breast. It hurt all the time, but even more if I bent over or laid in certain positions.  I could breathe and wasn't short of breath, but it felt awful.

The "hug" lasted about 6-8 wks. and gradually went away for the mostpart.  Sometimes I feel uncomfortable where the underwire of my bra sits, but only on occasion.  So, for me, I'd say it did go away.  Thank goodness--it was very frightening.

The numbness has pretty much receded too--except for my hands.  They have improved.

Everyone is different in relapses and remissions, but just from my own experience, the symptoms you describe from this current exaberbation will probably diminish greatly or go away completely with time.

Stay positive -- we're all in this together!

The MS hug is different from numbness.  It's either a banding paresthesia around the torso, or it's an actual spasm of the intercostal muscles.  It can be very painful!

Numbness from breast to waist is almost always a result of lesions in the torso.  I'm numb from my bra strap to the lumbar region.  I have patchy areas of sensation in the front, but the back is completely numb.  For a while, it crawled like there was bugs all over it!  So I much prefer the numbness.

Hello,

Sorry to hear that you are having this.

I think everybody's hugs are different in character and in how long it lasts.

Mine is more of a feeling somebody is giving me the Heimlich maneuver or a big bear hug where I cannot breathe.  Sometimes I will get sharp pains in my right ribs.  Mine come and go.  I usually tend to have increased "sighing" as well to try and alleviate pressure.

It sounds like you might be having as well some decreased proprioception there as well.

Hope you feel better soon.......

Welcome!

No one can really answer this question. Mine lasted a few months. I guess it's up to your body when it goes away if it ever will. Sorry
