MS Steriods and back/chest pain

I am just coming off some massive steriods for my recent MS attack (I use rebif on a regular basis) - would the steriods be causing me to have pain under my shoulder blades and in my upper chest area? I know the steriods can cause g.i. problems and I'm taking prescription meds for that as well, but I keep having this chest pain.

Thanks - if anyone is out there who has experienced this...

Welcome SBA59!

I hope that stays away for you, but no harm in following up w/the Dr. right?

I'm glad you like it here, we are all particularly proud of the relationships we have, along with the educational pieces.

You care to tell us a little more about yourself? If not, that is ok too.  How long you been diagnosed? How is your MS?  You get many flares like this and have to go on the steroids?

I'm Shelly, was diagnosed last year.  I was on Rebif too, off of it temporarily due to an allergic reaction to my meds, and am not certain which one it was.  I plan on challenging it as soon as the allergist comes up w/a way she wants to proceed.

Looking forward to your participation! Hope to see you around soon!
Be well,
Shelly

For me massive is 200 mg a day for 5 days, tapering down - last time it was the IV steriods then the 200 mg tapering down - for about three weeks this time only 15 days - but the pain began about 2 days after under the left shoulder blade, around the chest - not what I call the MS "hug" or contristriction - I did call the doctor office and left message with MS nurse - but no call back and pain subsided when I took Ibuprofen - it got better for a few days then on Sunday - yesterday started back - I slept well last night after posting this and no pain this morning thus far - but yes - if I get it today again I'm calling the doctor - I go in next tuesday for my 6 month check up anyway...

Thanks for responding to this question though - this is a great website! I have also thought of the gallbladder thing because of and on with our without steroids I've had this type of pain, but it generally didn't last as long as this seems to be lasting.

Hi, welcome, I can't tell what kind of pain you are having.  Can you describe it a little more?  Is it pain when you breathe or is it constant?  Is it positional at all?  Are there places you can push on the cause it to hurt?

What do you mean by massive steroids?  Is it more than the usual 1000mg of Solumedrol for 5 days?

This is a leading question, but I'll ask it anyway.  Is the pain at all mostly on the right side and radiating from the from to just at the bottom of the right shoulder blade?  (Suggestive of gallbladder disease)

Hi dose steroids can still cause GI bleeding despite the meds, so watch out for any black tarry stools.

Basically, I can't think of a reason for the steroids to be causing chest and back pain like you describe, and I hope others chime in, but no matter what, this is something you should report first thing in the morning to your GP and neuro.

I'll be looking for your answers.
