Hi Love,
I like that MAma much better than madame! :-)

Almost eveyrone with MSsuffers from constipation, often on a regular basis.  When you can't go, that stuff just sits there and incubates and produces more and more gas.  Or at least it does for me.

Trying to stay regular is really important to help this problem - the best way to start is watching your diet and what you eat,  pay attention to what causes you more probnlems than other foods.  For me I know milk products cause me distress, but I just am not ready to give up the ice cream! :-)

To keep your bowels moving regularly, you also need regular exercise if possible,  It doesn't have to be strenuous, but walking or swimming is a good workout for your system.

There are many over the counter (OTC) products you can also use to help soften and move stool in your system.  You don't want to use harsh products or ones that make you dependent on taking these, so you really need to talk to your doctor about what would be best for your situation.

I imagine this is quite an embarassing topic to bring up but please do it.  The doctors have heard all of this before plus a whole lot more.    As icky as it might seem to you and me, it is all in a day's work for doctors who deal with all these bodily functions all the time.  The same  goes for any urinary problems might also be experiencing .........

I hope some of this has helped - but I especially hope you will stop through often to ask your questions or to share more of your story with us

my best to you, Lulu

I don't recall reading about MS-related flatulence problems before, but I know urinary and bowel issues are relatively common, so it makes sense that MS could affect your, uh, gas control as well.  I believe there are medications available for bowel issues, so it's probably worth talking with your doctor to see if they might help you.  And, as others have suggested, you probably want to watch what you eat to try to reduce gas-producing foods.  It might take some experimentation to figure out what foods are contributing most to your problems.

It might also be worthwhile to lookup all your medications on drugs.com, to see if any list intestinal issues or flatulence as side-effects.  You have fewer options if your problem is caused by a medication you really need to take, but at least you'd know who to blame.  And changing your diet still might help.

Everything has it's up-side, eh?  It is good that you are a great source of laughter for your hubby.  Our household has it's rip-roaring times too, like a stand-up (or sit down) comedy act.  LOL

Love5 - Try some GasX to ease the flatulence.

Hi Love5,
Can we assume that you are talking about flatulence - that bodily function that makes grown men laugh out loud?  Well at least my husband does! :-)

With MS our digestive system is always  working a bit different - we have drugs that may interfere with the normal process.  We also  may not get enough exercise or eating the proper diet - both of those help with the production (or lack of) of gas.

Diet is a big one -you may be consuming food that produces gas or eating lots of fiber?

I know I suffer tremendous bouts with intestinal gas that can be not only uncomfortable but also embarassing.

If you want, give us some more details and we'll see if we can help.

be well,
Lulu

i [wish] i could help us on this issue. i've had serious intestinal gas issues since my lower back injury and the first instance of neurologic issues which occurred close together.  the neurologic issue has finally been narrowed down to 2 possible demyelinating diseases (the last i heard).

all these years i have often wondered the connection, a nerve thing, an immune thing, , etc., don't really know.

the intensity of this comes and goes.

hope some of the folks on the list can get you better info, but thought i would chime in anyways.
