So nice to see your sunny face around here!  Well, I do not have a clue about the "sink hole"  but I hope your doctor can figure it out!

Just wanted to say hi again,

hiya guys- I am off to work. And just wanted to say I am glad I remembered yall or I would be lovely basked case now trying to decide what to do... it has has gotten deeper and the swelling above it on my flank more pronounced or maybe it's more pronounced becuase it's deeper (which is first... the egg or the chicken?)  Also.... the skin is peeling out of it. Which has me wondering? So, I am going to call my doc as soon as the good place is awake and moving. :) And just put all this wondering to rest. See ya'll later....

Helen- I sure hope this thing doesn't stretch any deeper- I am thin and right now at the rate it has gone it has already gone deep enough I can touch the wing of my pelivs bone. EWWWW!

Momzilla- hiya hiya!

I'm loving the commentary on the volcanoes...

I have muscle atrophy of both my gluteal muscles. It looks much the same, altho mine are easily identifiable due to the staining of many iron injections. The stain was obvious, but the "sinkholes" didn't develop for at least 6 months. They stretch the width of both buttocks, exactly where the shots were. I will post pics of my behind on my profile, which I am not proud of and will delete in a few days, but I think they are much the same as you are describing. I'm willing to take one for the team :)
I learned that I should have been more attentive, because I do have resulting muscle deficits and I didn't even mention it for a few months. I had so many other things going on, I wasn't thinking about whether or not my butt was attractive! LOL. I am now working with physio to try to regain use of those muscles. It might be useful to learn a few exercises and start doing them sooner to strengthen and forestall any damage.

If the shot was in May (and, of course, in that spot), this could still be the result now three months later.

Hmmm.....your use of the word "sinkhole" made me remember something.  In the 1940's a sinkhole developed in a farmer's field in Michuacan, Mexico.  It got bigger and bigger and began releasing steam.  Over the next decade it grew into a towering volcano of over 1,400 ft.  If the doctor can't give you any answers, you might try calling the US Geological Survey.

Keep us posted.

Once again, you amaze me, Quix! :) I had to laugh, but no heavenly bodies have struck here!

I just got off the phone with the BCBS triage nurse, and bless her soul, without the aid of a picture, she had no idea what on earth I was talking about, She gave up and told me that unless it is draining, or I am running a fever, I was to go to the doctor in the morning. They really are quite sweet though.

I am quite allergic to Penicillin so no worries there, and I haven't got a shot since May. And like I told Ren, I can't remember doing anything to it to warrant a big hematoma. No fever, PTL and no pain just uncomfortableness. Like achieness?

I will call the Doc (I have the best one EVER right now) and try to get in and see what's going on,,, and hope the sink hole doesn't grow any bigger. It's not that cute- although I guess I can count my lucky stars that it's not in a place anyone will ever be viewing on a regular basis! smiles.

I'm a little hypervigilant about the pre-existant thing- they make you pay the whole thing if it is- and wowzers... a doctor's visit is a lot of moolah when it's not covered at all. :)

You are all the BEST... thanks so much!

Hi, Kiddo!  I looked at the spot on your back and have seen things like that before, but always with some sort of trauma preceding it.  It looks like either fat necrosis or the effect of the reabsorption of a bad hematoma.

When someone has suffered bleeding into a muscle causing a deep hematoma (lump of clotted blood) it can often just hang around as a lump for weeks to months.  Then it will often calcify (becoming hard and lumpy) or it will completely reabsorb.  If there has been a lot of tissue destruction from the injury, after all the blood and dead tissue reabsorbs, then it will leave a divet like that one.

The skin is reddened, though, so I don't completely understand it.  It the area is painful or warm, or if you have fever or chills, then it can be an infection and is very urgent.  Typically, though an infection will have swelling.

The kind of injury that could cause this kind of think is blunt trauma - causing a deep hematoma or bleeding following an intramuscular injection into the gluteus - like a penicillin shot.  It looks like that crater is right where an injection would go, though I can't be sure (don't see all the landmarks).  We also can see areas of fat necrosis following SQ injection of some meds like Copaxone.

Finally, there are similar craters around the world reflecting the crashing to earth of meteors.  Could you have struck by the falling of a heavenly body?

I think a doctor should see this.  It is not a pre-existing thing, it is happening right now.  If there is no pain, warmth, fever, it can wait until tomorrow.

PS To the entry above...perhaps a dermatology appointment is needed if not a good PCP. Since it seems to be occurring rapidly, MY opinion is to have it seen by a doc. Check with the Nurse Health line... Good luck and take care of that sunny little face!!!

Sunny,

One other suggestion is some sort of skin malady. Since the skin is reddened. Is the area rough or scaly? Is the the skin tight over the area? Is it sore?

Jen suggestion of the BCBS Nurse Health line is a good idea. They can triage the problem according to their protocol.

Let us know what you find out!!

Hugs and smiles,
Ren

Sunny, you are a woman of many mysteries.  I expect to see you on Mystery Diagnosis someday.  But for the present issue the sinking hole in your back is quite a dilemma.  It could be atrophy like Jens was mentioning, but I am still thinking swelling for some reason.

I hope that you can get a PM to quix and see what she thinks.  This is very interesting and I can imagine that it is something you'd like an answer to.  IF you have to go see the doctor, then go in case this turns out to be something that needs attention.

Take care.

Hey girl, of course we remember you.  It is good to see you back.  I don't have a guess about the spot so I think a call to the doctor is in order, unfortunately.

Now tell us about the job - is it still the same one?  Have you made friends at work?  Hoow do you like living on your own now?

I know, lots of questions but I really do want to know.

hugs, L

The only thing I can think of is that you've got a muscle in your back that's atrophying (sp?) er.... getting smaller.  When you've got a severed nerve to a muscle, the muscle will shrink because the body thinks it's not there any more.

Does your insurance company have a 'call the nurse' option?  I used to have this with United Health - it was great.  If something was going on, I could always call and ask the nurse about it before I decided to make an appointment.

Ren, oddly I've went through the list and I haven't injured this area, burned it, had a bug bite, hit it and bruised it, had a shot or did anything to it by any means which is a surpise I must say... I just don't know what it is? So, I'm kinda clueless.

So, I guess shrinking is healing you are saying? odd way to heal.

I guess I'll try to PM quix and she if she'll give her wonderful words of wisdom.

yay! It is friends! Oh my, I'm so glad to "see" you! :) Thanks for your comments!

Hope someone can shed some light- although it looks more like a doctor trip it in order sooner rather than later if no one can?

HI Sunny!

Glad to have you back. Sorry for the reason though ;-(. I looked at the pics and the only thing I can relate it to is scar tissues retracting as it heals, similar to what burns look like as they heal. Is the reddened area new or old. New could be infection.

I'm sorry I'm not much help. Hopefully Quix will be along. She's injured her foot but definitively will respond if you PM her.

Good luck!!! Happy to hear about your job and new apartment!

Hugs and smiles,
Ren

ok, I HAVE been gone to long. Here I am posting before I"ve even typed up my post. I my goodness. Long day! Sigh! I am doing well, working long hours, and loving my job! I moved into a sweet little apartment too! I still have my lovely battles with health and I think of you often.

Which brings me to my current problem and why I am here. I have suddenly developed a spot on my back that is sinking in about 2 by 3 inches over the matter of three days and it has grown and I am needing to know if it is a rush to the doctor or a make an appointment and go then type thing... becuase I do not have good insurance although I have a good job. My insurance is BCBS but doens't cover pre-exisitng for 9 months and has a lot of other loopholes I am finding as I pay, etc. GRIN!!
Please see picture I will post on my profile. It is a bit disconcerting, it is sinking it to my pelvis bone and swelling obove it on the back left side.
Thank you for the advise!
