Neuros and Specializations

I am in the market for a new neuro. LOL. I have a list from MS society of suitable neuros in my area. When I look at their online profiles, however, they are all designated with a speciality in neurology, then something like neurophysiology, neuropsychiatry, neuroopthamalogy, neuro this, neuro that.......I haven't found neuroMSology yet. Do the supplementary labels matter bearing in mind that these are on the MS society's list???

That's a great idea, Alex, although I think I might feel like an interloper going to an MS event, because I don't have a dx. And then there's the "what if I meet someone who knows me? and then it turns out I had no business being there after all?" I dunno. I will keep that in mind though.

If the MS Society lists them they have knowledge of MS. You might go to a MS support meeting in your area and see who folks go to. That is how I found my doctor. Also he gave  a talk at a MS Society event and I talked to him afterward. He was really interested in my case. He was so interested after I became his patient he looked up my records from childhood from the hospital.
We do not have any pure MS neurologists in our area but we have 5 that know a lot about MS.

Thank you SO much, Laura, for taking the time to look that up for me. I did not know about this website, and was just working with an MS society list which has about 10-12 names. Trying to get an appt. now. I don't think I'm quite ready just yet to travel out of state but I wouldn't rule it out.

there is no degree in MSology, yet.  Maybe someday.  In the meantime, the best hope is to look at the website for the Consortium for MS Centers  and check out their membership directory.

Neurologists can only be listed there if they meet some very specific criteria, including knowledge of MS, participation in MS trials, staff that is knowledgeable about MS, etc., and can pass an inspection and the exams.  That doesn't guarantee the doctor is going to have great bedside manners, but it does at least mean they know what they are looking at most of the time.

You can find their list at mscare.org but it appears there are only two in Indiana - Ft Wayne Neurological Center and the Indiana University Multiple Sclerosis Center. You will most probably need a referral for either one of these.  If you can travel out of state, you might head to Chicago or over to the Cleveland Clinic.  Louisville also has a reputable clinic.

Their directory search page is at

Lol.....you made me have a good chuckle. I've not heard of those terms & thought it was just Neurologist & then what their interests were in. I'm sorry I can't help you with this one especially being all the way over in Australia. I think we just have neurologists & a sparse amount of Neuro-Opthamologist's.

Good luck,

Karry.
