OFF THE OXY!!! Wants to try an new Rx

My doc has thankfully decided to take me off the oxy and wants to try a med that apparently is used for Fibro treatment that is THC based but I didn't catch the name.

Does anyone know the name of it and has anyone tried it?

The oxy did nothing to alleviate my pain and the Lyrica is not doing anything either.

I am just sooo glad to be off the oxy!  I can't stand the way it makes me feel and I can't function while on it!

My father contends that marijuana won't be legalized because of financial reasons.  If it were legal, you might be able to grow it yourself, thus pharmasutical companies might miss out on a buck or two.  Why is it legal to be stoned on vicodin or oxy, (by rx) but not marijuana?  Riddle me that, Batman.

What is your opinion about Methadone for actually controlling pain more adequately?  My Pain Management Center wanted me to try it, but when they told me that I HAD to take a dose every 12 hours, whether I was in pain or not, I opted to not take that kind of drug.  I've heard too many bad things about it.

Thanks,
Heather

Hey, Kiddo, my note to Rena about the half-life of methadone should have been addressed to you.  'my bad!

Honey, I hate to give you bad news, but the 56-103 hours is not the duration of methadone in your system.  It is the "half-life."  This means, that at worst, the drug level falls "in half" every 103 hours.  So (worst case) four days to half the level, 8 days to one quarter of the level, etc.

In Pediatrics, the worst thing we would get would be methadone-addicted babies.  They would withdraw for weeks, literally.  Heroin addition was much quicker for the baby to move through.

Now, I'm not saying that you will be in withdrawal.  I was using the babies' experience to show how long the drug stays in the system.  That is why it is used in chronic pain management; to avoid the peaks and valleys of the faster activing and faster-metabolized opiates.

Just be prepared for a little longer than three days to get the levels down.

Quix...I appreciate that you are backing me up with the decision to give this drug a try...I am all for whatever works to relieve the pain and I of course agree that the psychotically bizarre thinking of my doctors speaks volume's in that it is incredibly ironic that they will offer me this for the pain which is supposed to be used for MS patients and yet they stick to the belief that my MS is inactive.  "Dumb as a Stump" my Grandpa would have said!

I AM SOOOO SORRY FOR THE PAIN YOU ARE IN RIGHT NOW AND IT SEEMS TO ME THAT THEY ARE USING YOU AS A SORT OF LAB RAT DON'T YOU?

I HOPE THAT YOU ARE ABLE TO GET IN TOUCH WITH SOMEONE THAT CAN PROVIDE YOU WITH SOME MARYJANE SO THAT YOU ARE AT LEAST NOT SUFFERING WITH THE NAUSEA!

THE PAIN IS ONE THING BUT NAUSEA IS IN MY MIND THE WORST!  I AM HAVING DOUBLE VISION FOR SOME UNKNOWN REASON AND THE NAUSEA IS HORRIBLE!

I CAN OF COURSE STILL FEEL THE PAIN BUT THE NAUSEA DOES OVERRIDE IT AND THEN I FORGET WHAT I AM MOANING ABOUT!

MY HUBBY HAD ME IN STITCHES THIS MORNING THOUGH TRYING TO EXPLAIN HOW THE CONSTIPATION FROM THE NARCOTICS IS CAUSING THE DOUBLE VISION!

I CAN'T EVEN BEGIN TO EXPLAIN THE ANATOMY OF THAT ONE BUT IT WAS HILARIOUS AND I WISH YOU HAD HEARD IT! HA HA

THEN HE IS THROWING IN THE BOUNCING LEGS AND IT IS A CIRCUS FOR SURE!

I HOPE THAT YOU GET SOME RELIEF SOMEHOW AND IF I COULD HELP YOU I HOPE YOU KNOW THAT I WOULD...

TAKE CARE AND I WILL TALK TO YOU SOON.

LORDY, I PRAY THIS GIVES YOU RELEIF.

I BELEIVE IN MEDICAL MARIJUANA, HECK I BELEIVE IN MARIJUANA IN GENERAL FOR PAIN.I WISH OUR US GOVERMENT WOULD GET THEIR HEADS OUT OF THEIR HINEYS AND APPROVE IT.

MY NEURO TOOK ME OFF ALL OPIATES AND PUT ME ON METHADONE,ITS A NARCOTIC  ANALGESIC AND BOY HAVE I BEEN SICK.

IT WAS AN ABRUPT CHANGE AND I THINK I SHOULD OF HAD THE OPIATES OUT OF MY SYSTEM FIRST,BUT MY NEURO SAID WE WERE STARTING OUT AT A LOW DOSE IT WON'T HURT

I WAS AT THE ER MONDAY NIGHT WITH A FEVER OF 103.7 AND THAT WAS LOWEST ON MONDAY,PULSE RATE A 158 AND MY PAIN LEVEL REACHED A 20.
THE ER DR. CONCLUDED IT WAS A VIRAL INFECTION.OKAY MAYBE IT IS.

ITS THURSDAY AND MY FEVER IS STILL AROUND 101 AND THATS TAKING 1500MGS OF EXTRA STRENGTH TYLENOL EVER 4 HOURS.THIS ALL STARTED ON SUNDAY.

I ASK THE ER DR IF THIS COULD BE THE WITHDRAWL OF THE OPIATES AND VALIUM AND ATIVAN AND HE SAID NO----BULL PUCKY.I STOPPED THE METHADONE,I CAN'T KEEP IT DOWN ANYWAY.90% OF MY SYMPTOMS SAY ALLERGIC REACTION TO THE METHADONE.YA KNOW HOW YA GET THE PHARMACY SHEETS WITH YOUR MEDS.

I FEEL LIKE **** AND I AM IN THE WORST PAIN I HAVE EVER EXPERIENCED.BUT I NEED TO KNOW FOR SURE IF ITS THE METHADONE OR AN ACTUAL VIRAL INFECTION.THE METHADONE HAS A SHELF LIFE IN THE BLOOD PLASMA LEVELS FOR 56-103 HOURS AND ITS BEEN ALMOST 24 HOURS.I HAVE AT LEAST 3 DAYS TO GO YEA!!!!!!

I WAS TOLD IF I SMOKE MARIJUANA IT WOULD HELP WITH THE NAUSEA , THE HEADACHE AND PAIN.COMPLIMENTS OF MY CHIROPRACTOR.

RENA, ITS IRONIC THAT THIS DR. WILL GIVE YOU A MED THAT TREATS MS PAIN
AND THEY WON'T OKAY A DMD FOR YOU.I'D SHAKE MY HEAD BUT IT HURTS TO MUCH.AT LEAST THEY ARE TRYING SOMETHING DIFFERENT FOR YOUR PAIN.

HOPE YOU DO WELL UNTIL THEY START THIS MED.

LIVING WITH INCURABLE DISEASES THAT CAUSE PAIN,NO ONE SHOULD SHOULD SAY YEA OR NEY WHEN A PERSON IS ON PAIN MEDS,NO MATTER WHAT THEY ARE,WHAT WORKS FOR ONE MAY NOT WORK FOR ANOTHER.

LIKE I TELL MY FAMILY POT IS THE ANSWER,SPRAY,PILL FORM OR JUST SMOKING IT,HECK THE INDIANS SMOKED IT FOR PAIN RELEIF.ITS A NATURAL PLANT.

WHAT URKS ME IS THE US GOVERMENT WILL ALLOW OPIUM(A NATURAL PLANT) USED IN OPIATE DRUGS,BUT NOT MARIJUANA.

I HOPE YOU SEE IMPROVEMNT SOON

I'm thrilled for you.  The potential for pain relief in THC is tremendous.  Researchers in Canada have been working on delivery systems that remove the toxins and allow direct inhalation.  I wonder if this med is the one I have been reading about.  Is it newly available?  They have found that it can be immediately effective and so the patient can carefully titrate the dose and not overshoot it, which happens with the pill form.

The hysteria about THC never made any sense to me.  Relief is relief.  I don't begrudge anyone any safe way of reducing their pain.  There is no nobility in enduring pain and no sainthood for the people who would withhold palliative meds, under the guise of "addiction-fear."

I have been a vocal and monetory advocate of Medical Marijuana laws here in the US, and I applaud Canada for it's compassion and rational thinking in approving these meds. Each person can decide for themselves what they wish to take for pain relief, but I do not believe a society should lobby to outlaw meds that relieve suffering.  This from a society that allows alcohol commercials in unlimited numbers, and is seeing teens smoke in ever increasing numbers, but creates an environment that cause people to apologize and rationalize the use of narcotic meds for their pain - as we have seen so often on the forum.

Also, we need to put this into context with a disease (MS) that raises a person's risk of suicide (from depression, pain, loss of function) seven times over the general population.

However.....it does speak volumes about the psychotically bizarre thinking of your doctors.  I'm with Chris, it is incredibly ironic!

What is SATIVEX® used for?
SATIVEX® is used for the adjunctive treatment for the symptomatic relief of neuropathic pain in multiple sclerosis in adults.

Good thing that my physicians will not provide me with the DMD's cause they might get in the way of my THC therapy for my inactive MS...right???

Rena,

I've been told (just so your warned) that the Sativex tastes AWFUL! And apparently it's not particularly potent, at least compared to Marijuana in it's more familiar form! lol

I sure hope it works well for you though! I wasn't trying to down play it at all. Just warning you about the supposed bad taste, and hopefully the potency of the Sativex will prove more benficial to you than ganga in it's more popular form, and with less side effects (I know we've talked about this before).

And your doc OFFERED you pot?? No DMDs but pot's ok?? LOL

Ok, so it's not POT, but close enough!

Good Luck, keep me updated, I'd love to know if it helps you!

Love
Chris

Rena, I hope it works for you and you find the relief you need and deserve.  I think everyone on this forum needs to respect the choices of others, no one is in a position to judge anyone.  God Bless Rena.

Is it the Oxy that is causing the bumpy legs...I think that's what you called it in an earlier post.

You need to feel better.

Tammy -This is the one that my dr. is talking about.  In April 2005 GW received regulatory approval for Sativex® in Canada for symptomatic relief of neuropathic pain in Multiple Sclerosis. In August 2007, Health Canada approved Sativex® as adjunctive analgesic treatment in patients with advanced cancer who experience moderate to severe pain during the highest tolerated dose of strong opioid therapy for persistent background pain. Both approvals were secured under the Notice of Compliance with Conditions (NOC/c) policy.

LATW - I would not wish the narcotic Oxycodone on my worst enemy to be honest with you.  I have taken my last dose this a.m. and unless I have severe withdrawal tomorrow a.m. I will not take it again unless I am flat on my back in a hospital bed where someone else is completely responsible for everything in my life.  I just cannot function on it!

Wanna - I will be off of the Oxy until Tuesday and then she will arrange an Rx for me and I think she might want to talk to my Neuro about it as well...she didn't say that but I got that feeling but I don't think my care is any business of my neuro's any longer...does anyone else?

Denise61 - To each his/her own I guess...I have been in severe pain since February 2007 with little to no relief after trying Tegretol, Solumedrol, Prednisone, Topamax, Neurontin, Lyrica and Oxycodone.  If a spray that contains THC works to help me have a life that includes walking without a cane, being able to drive, and hold a job, I am willing to give it a try.  You have to consider if I were your daughter and suffering chronic, disabling pain, would I have to "hide" the fact that I were taking a drug that contains a substance that has been approved by the government but not approved by you?

I don't know how a person can tolerate oxy very long. I had it after surgery and I didn't like it at all.
