OT What's in a name

OK I'm trying to come up with a name for my new home in ME. I just can't decide or even come up with new ideas for the name.

When my Dad lived in OR he made up a sign to hang at the gate onto his property on the mountain he lived on. He called it "The Sanctuary". Kind of fitting since he was a minister. After his death my brother. who also lives on that mountain, took over that name for his place. This was also fitting as he spent many years as a missionary. In a way I like that name as with 69 acres and my PTSD it seems kind of fitting to me. But on the other hand my brother is considering moving to ME as well so we would end up with 2 places by that name.

I have also considered "Paradise" for a name. But since it doesn't have a large waterfall next to my home this doesn't quite fit the place. Though it is probably as close to paradise I'll ever get in my life.

I have also considered a tongue in cheek name, "Pair - A - Dice" with images of dice on each end.

So forum friends do you have any suggestions or ideas as to what to name the place? My brother has told me he would carve the sign while he is out here so I would like to make a decision before he gets here in the next couple of weeks.

I was thinking as you really liked the name "The Sanctuary" & to keep it in the family, what about something with Sanctuary in it like....."Sailors Sanctuary"......"My Sanctuary" & my other thought was something like "Sailor's Rest" or "Wonderland" or "Piece of Heaven". I will keep thinking.

I'm in Australia so I could be so wrong with my choices & even though I had many horses in life & rode since childhood I've never owned land like yours to be able to give it a name. Good luck with it all. Karry.

Thanks for all of the ideas Several of them are in the running and have inspired a couple of ideas of my own. Keep them coming as so far none have given me the "eureka"  moment of knowing that is the one. I keep hoping that Quix will chime in as I'm sure she would come up with some good ones. I've also been trying to come up with something based on Nature as that is another love of my as you probably know from all of my wildlife reports.

List so so far is:

Journey's End  - Thanks Corrie
Sail Away - Reminds me of a song by Enya that I love.
Sailor's Swan Song - Thank for the inspiration Melliepede
Frozen Hearth - from the game Skyrim that I play on my computer.
Rest of Heaven - A play on PD idea.
Pair A Dice - Just for some humor.
Humming Bird Alley - This one is for Sarah and the only wildlife I have seen there.

So people keep them coming.

Dennis

This is the 4th try at posting this.  My connection must be horrible.

Okay, think about "Haven of Rest," which happens to be the name of a beautiful old Gospel song.

Just a thought.  Peace.

What about Sailor's Song?

Love that southern cross song.

Look forward to hearing your home's name when you choose it.

Blessings.

Well, if not bliss, how about Almost Bliss? Always good to leave room for more.

My advice is to stay away from names that sound like rest homes or cemeteries.

ess,

The new place is kind of a combination of those things.

There are woods (many types of trees) on about 1/2 of the place, another 1/3 is open field. It is kind of concealed with trees along the property lines. In fact before I left I put up driveway markers as I was constantly missing the drive when coming to it. Oh, and the house is about 500 feet from the road so not that easy to see unless you are looking down the driveway.

Not sure if I could call it sunny, even though the tress sit back a ways from the house, as it has rained almost every day I have been up there. There is also a brook as Sarah mentioned and a fairly good sized pond.

I'm not sure how to describe how I feel about the place. I guess mostly excited. But I get that way about every place I buy. "New Toy" syndrome is what it is called.  I've already come up with about $50K worth of things I'd like to do with the place...Not going to happen though.

I definitely don't think "bliss" would fit. Now if I had a wife and children living there that might make sense.

Corrie,

When I read "Haven" the first thought was of the TV show by that name. In case you haven't seen it the show is about a town that has all kinds of BAD things happening all of the time. But otherwise it would be a good name. Journey's End does sound pretty good and will be in the running for now.

Sarah,

But you took the feather with you so it would have to be "no more feather brook". LOL

All,
As you might guess from my username I love sailing and music. So I have also been considering "Southern Cross" after one of my favorite songs. But since the home is in Maine, I'm not so sure that would fit.

Hi Dennis, I am sure there are many options out there and I love trying to name things that are precious, but I am not sure what exactly would suit your new home.

Off the top of my head, how about Haven (similar to Sanctuary) or Journey's End to signify a coming home of sorts?

Please let us know what you decide on and congratulations on your new digs!

I see from another thread that living in a state of bliss appeals to you most of all. So why not name your new home Bliss?

A rose by any other name would smell as sweet.

Hey, Dennis, why not give us some info as to what your new home is like? High land, low land, open, concealed, sunshiney, woodsy, etc. Also, how you feel about it--perhaps relief, renewal, relaxation, peace, delight, tranquility, and so on. That should give us something to go on.

If 'Sanctuary' is taken, how 'bout Sanctuary Much'? Har har. You're grateful to have it, no?
