Off topic---Doggy Surgery today

I know that practically everyone here is an animal-lover with at least one pet at home. (Why do you suppose that is?)  So I know you'll all understand my worry today. In a few minutes I have to take Poppy, my little furry friend, to the vet's for surgery. She has several large stones in her bladder which are causing extreme incontinence, and without surgery these are life-threatening. The vet says the problem is congenital, and that she can't metabolize minerals properly.

Well of course I'll be a wreck till she's safely recuperating. The poor little gal is not even 4 yet--her birthday is Jan. 9. And by the way, if you check my profile, there's a pic of Poppy. She's the happy-looking Cavalier King Charles Spaniel.

Your anxious MS friend,
ess

Our dogs and cats are the ones that we turn to sometimes. I do . They are family. My dog and cats have seen me through some of my sickest times. We will just have to be there for Poppy too. Good luck Poppy and as soon as you can have a treat get your mommy to give you one from Christy!

Glad to hear Poppy's better.  About the molecule mixing...reminds me of two books by Dean Koontz.  They take place in a town called Moonlight Bay, and our hero, Christopher Snow has that disease where any amount of sunlight damages him so badly that he can only use candlelight and only go out at night.  He has a faithful laborador named Orson, but we eventually come to find out the animals and humans in Moonlight Bay are swapping DNA on viruses. Orson got a bunch from Christopher's mom, so they're brothers.

You and your little satellite dish take care.

Haven't you heard the saying that pets are like their owners..lol I am glad that Poppy is doing well.  It is so horrible when our animals are sick.

Thank you for thinking of Poppy! She's such a friendly little gal that I know she'd thank you too, if she could. I brought her home after only 3 days of recuperation from the surgery, and she's been on antibiotics ever since. She still has an irritated bladder and is not holding urine well, which the vet said is common if not 'normal.'  Otherwise she's quite chipper.

Next week she'll have her sutures taken out. Meanwhile she's started obsessively licking near the incision, so that she has big raw patches. Since I can't stop her from licking, I had to pick up one of those big plastic collars today. She hates it but can't get it off. So for the time being she'll just have to look like Sister Mary Popsicle. I also got permission to give her half a Benadryl twice a day. That's really helped her in the past with licking, after she'd been very sick with an intestinal thing.

Now this is kind of strange--My dog is having urinary troubles and so am I, though I don't have stones and she isn't cathing :-)  And we both need big time antihistamines. Are we getting our molecules mixed up?

Hi there,
I hope surgery goes well for Poppy.  I am sure it will, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are a gorgeous breed but according to my daughter they are prone to stones but surgery is usually safe and easy for this.  So try not to worry too much,

B.T.W. my daughter is head vet nurse for a very busy animal hospital and she has had extra training in surgery/theatre and radiology, she is always doing extra courses.

We all love our pets, they are good company, I know ours are like part of the family and they seem to annoy me less than my kids (ha ha).

Cheers,
Udkas.

Thank you all for your good wishes. I do appreciate them very much.

Poppy came through the surgery okay, though she's still more or less 'critical' because this was a dangerous operation. I've talked to the vet 3 times and will check with him again in the morning. He removed "numerous" stones from her bladder. Assuming she continues to progress, she still won't be home for several days at least. Then it will be a problem keeping her quiet!

Hugs to all,

How did Poppy do today?  I hope it all went well.  I SO understand your worrying about her, I have two babies of my own (poodles) and am so stressed when they are not well.  I know you are looking forward anxiously to having her back on your lap, happy and healthy, warm and cuddly.  Our pups really are man and woman's best friend.

I am a big animal lover so I know how it feels.  I am sure she will do fine.  The biggest problem will be as someone else said, keeping her still and from licking her stitches,

My thoughts and prayers are with youl

Hi Ess,

I'm sorry Poppy is having to go thru this.  Don't worry it will be okay.

I talk from the experience of going thru this with my Chihuahua, Prissy, a few years ago.  Prissy was 6 at the time.  She did really well and the worse part was trying to get her to be still til her surgery wound healed....hahaha

Here's sending you and Poppy lots of hugs and well wishes.

Es,
I worry more about my five animals health  than my own. When I had no insurance I did not go to Drs. but my animals went to the vet. Cavaliers are great dogs. Having worked at many vet clinics including one Specialty Hospital I can assure you that your dog is receiving more kindness and care than most humans ever get. They don't have to distance themselves from their patients so your dog is getting lots of hugs  When I had an almond size stone blocking my ureter it took four months to have it removed. I wish I could be treated by my vets. Hang in there.

That is tough when we have to hand over our babies to someone else & trust in their care.  I do hope it goes fast & that she heals even faster.  She is one lucky girl to have such a caring mommy!  Take care.

I know she will do great during the surgery and afterwards.

Will they send her home today or keep her overnight?    The doc will fix her up and I'm sure she will be so happy to have such a loving and caring "mom".  Please let us know how she is doing.  Poor thing, not even 4 yet and having bladder surgery.

Take care, both of you.
