Recent MRI

I am 28, male. Just had a repeat MRI because I had one years ago that showed demyelination in 4 places, and just got a new one that reads:

"There are numerous (approximately 10) nonspecific foci of increased T2 and FLAIR signal within the cerebral white matter. They are present in the subcortical, central, and periventricular white matter regions. Findings are non specific."

That was the only part of note, all else came back negative.
I have FREQUENT hypoglycemia with neuroglycopenic (brain) effects which I have been to 7 endocrinologists and we are still unable to find the reason, but I FULLY believe the spots and the sugar drops are connected.
Diet makes no difference.

I am having symptomwise neurologically: A bit more difficulty gathering thoughts, unfulfilled sleep, hot baths & showers make me very very weak for a day or so, video games make me nauseous and confused, and I'm depressed.

My MRIs were always fine until my HYPOGLYCEMIA came about.  I think I may have an autoimmune disease causing both... but I've never heard of severe hypoglycemia with MS.
I am not diabetic btw.

Any ideas?
Thanks so much.

I know very little about hypoglycemia, but I do know that you could have that and a neurological condition too. Rena does, of course.

I have never read that any blood or metabolic disorder causes brain lesions. Hypoglycemia is not a mimic of MS that has to be ruled out before an MS diagnosis can be made. Would you explain more about why you feel the two are related, or that one underlying illness could be causing both? Is this because of the timing, and you believe it is not a coincidence? I haven't heard that hypo is an autoimmune disorder.

I'm no doctor, of course, which is why I urge you to see a good neurologist to get to the bottom of things. You have abnormal brain MRIs which are getting worse, and you have symptoms that could well be MS. Many tests are needed before this determination can be made, though, and a lot of time has elapsed already.

Take care,
ess

Hi there...my name is Rena and I am the person to which sllowe was referring.  I am diagnosed with MS and recently had a bit of a relapse of my paratrigeminal neuralgia which apparently is related to my MS.  I was treated with IV steroids for three days and apparently this can cause hypoglycemia.  I have loser's for doctors and have a hard time getting information from them.  I had a random glucose test done 2 weeks ago and I have heard nothing of the results so I am to assume that the results are normal according to them...grrrr.  However, the results that I had gotten from a home glucometer pointed to hypoglycemia and the doctor said after seeing these results that this is something that should be covered closely.  HA!  I haven't heard from the doctor since and I really don't expect to.  I cut back on carbs and am being careful to watch what I am eating expecially in the a.m. and I haven't had any "episodes" of hypoglycemia for a while now.  I am sorry that I am not any help in this but I would have to agree with sllowe in that I haven't heard about any connection between hypoglycemia and MS.  If in the meantime I hear anything new I will be sure to let you know ok?  I wish you all the best and please stay in touch and let us know how you are doing ok?  There are a good group of people here and what one of us doesn't know, the next person is sure to have some sort of answer!

Lots of Hugs,
Rena

Thank you both :) Hope to find out what's going on. I really think BOTH my blood sugar and my white spots are from an autoimmune disorder. My doc once told me I had elevated Raji cells, Very low Folic Acid, indicating an autoimmune disorder.
I have read many times that blood sugar control is important for keeping away demyelination in diabetics, and I also know how harmful low blood sugar is on the brain. especially if you get 10 drops a day like i do.f  Thanks guys.

Hi there,

I'm w/Lu that it sure does sound like you need to find out why you have lesions w/the Neuro.

I read about hypoglycemia and there are to me, serious MS mimic symptoms.

We have a member who recently was dx'd with hypoglycemia and she also has MS.  I will hit her up and see if she is around.

Sorry for what you are going throu, I think you will like it here..

See you around!

Hi Slurpies, welcome to the MS forum.  This is a great place to ask questions because usually someone will come along with answers or at least ideas.

Blood glucose levels, including hypoglycemia, are a totally different issue from MS.  MS resides in our central nervous system and can be evidenced through our spinal fluid, not our blood.

I don't know that there is any blood sugar issue that would cause lesions on the brain.... does anyone else out there know this for sure?

When is your next followup with the neurologist?  It sure sounds like you need to be discussing treatment.

welcome again,
Lulu
