It's been awhile. I'll try to be brief. I'm 52, female, active, exercise 5-6 days a week- run, yoga, pilates, walking.
About 3 years ago, I had sharp stabbing pains in my right rib cage, lasted about a week, felt like I had the flu. I rode it out- it went away. (Thought- gallbladder might be starting to act up.)
In 2011- December, again- I felt flu like, dizzy, body aches, severe exhaustion and had a burning pain in my right ribs that would go into excruciating spasms- sent me to my knees a few times. Again- it eventually got better.
Neither of those times did I go to the doctor. I point this out so you'll know not only history of the pain, but so you'll understand that I am not someone who loves attention from doctors and run off to see them with every ache and pain. ;- ) Guess I'm also stubborn and more than a little afraid of all the medical stuff.
However, this past March I had no choice but to consult doctors. Ended up in ER after severe vertigo and left-sided face and neck numbness made me fear I was having a stroke. I felt again like I was coming down with the flu, had been suffering with vertigo, trouble swallowing, and pain under my right ribs.
After trip to ER- seeing 9 doctors total including 3 neurologists- after various mri's on head and neck and thoracic spine, various X-rays of esophagus, etc.- it's been 8 months of tests and doctors- and they all tell me they don't know what is wrong with me.
At best, the neurologists said I might have had a hemaplegic migraine with rare long lasting symptoms. Most of those things are better- still have numbness in left ear, cheek, neck and upper lip from time to time (now stress related?) , but it comes and goes. Dizziness is seldom now. Swallowing issue gone, though I'm still careful.
But the rib pain......
An ultrasound of my gall bladder showed polyps. Hida scan had me "borderline" as far as needing the gb to go. Gastro. doctor told me to wait it out and see if any other doctors could find cause of my rib pain - he thought it was neurological and not related to gb. But after some stomach trouble and another trip to ER- I decided to go ahead and have my gall bladder out- Praying that would be the cause.
Guess what---- 2 months later--- the right burning rib pain is still causing me grief and worry!!!!
It has spread from the front now to include the back of my ribs- burns and aches most days. Wakes me up at night if I roll over to my right side or back.
I see my neurologist for a check up next week. Please help me-- what the heck do I do????
My mri's all came back normal except for the thoracic spine one. No lesions in brain or neck, but in the T8/9 area in my spine there was a "pencil thin" hypersensitive white line. Radiologist said may be incidental- consult with patient about symptoms- my neurologist said it was "nothing."
When I see him next week-- how do I approach this rib pain issue with him? It's to the point now where anxiety is making me sick with worry. If no one knows why I have this pain (and yes - a few have looked at me like I'm crazy) where do I go from here???
Honestly- if a doctor told me I had ms - at this point- I might actually be relieved that I'm not dying of some undected cancer or something.
The last time I saw the neurologist in August- he prescribed Lidoderm patches and told me just to live with it- his wife uses patches for lower back pain, blah, blah, blah. He did agree to a CT-scan of ribs after I said-- "If this were you- what would you do?" But that got canceled because of my gallbladder surgery.
I really don't want anymore tests that involve radiation-- I've done enough this year! Any suggestions on what type of tests to ask for and/or what doctor I should be seeing if the neurologist doesn't see the need this time to help me with this ongoing, anxiety-producing rib pain issue? Before , rib pain lasted weeks at most-- this has been going on now for about 8 months- coming and going- now mostly staying.
Thanks so much for any advice you can give. I'm sure you can tell-- I'm desperate and losing hope right now.
