Suppose To Have MRI With/Without Contrast But Contrast Was Not Done, Any Ideas Why???

Hope someone can give me any ideas on this, as do not know what to think to be honest.

I am in the Limboland & from the UK.

I went to my MRI for my Brain, & my 1st MRI of the C & T of the spine, with/without contrast.

When I had the MRI wthout contrast done, the Radiologist asked whilst still in the machine if I was okay, I mentioned my back was starting to spasm, he said can you just wait for a couple of minutes, whilst I talk to the doctor on the phone. 2 minutes later he said right we are bringing you out now. So no contrast was done, but I do know this was scheduled as even the nurse mentioned it.

To be honest I did not think to ask why the contrast was not carried through, but the Radiologist are not allowed to discuss things if asked anyway.

Has anyone any ideas maybe why the contrast was not carried through, could it be there was enough evidence seen so need for contrast, or the opposite??? I am just confused!!!!

I have not got my next Neuro App till Sept, will be a nervous wreck by then.

I hope someone might show some light on this or has been through something similar, thanks guys!!!

the tech do see the image as it happens they have to to make sure you are lined up and if there is anything of concern to get the radiologist my good friend is a tech and has been for 20 years and has multiple stories of what she has seen during .....

i had mine done last week and was to have contrast but didn't... they did see all they could see with me enough for MS i did get to see my DR  with in 5 days though have pretty much a diagnoses and will be off to a MS clinic in the next month or so i hope you get answers soon good luck

You may want to call the lab and see when you can pick up your records of the MRI.  You will want a copy of it for your personal records.  This should only take a couple days (at least in the states).  Seeing the report may help you understand the MRI a bit before your Sept. appointment.  May ease your mind...

It's my understanding based on conversations that I have had with MRI technicians that they don't see the images while the procedure is being done. They may see them once the procedure is completed to determine if they captured good images before passing them onto the radiologist for review and interpretation.

If this understanding is correct, then it the technician would not be able to tell that your muscles were in spasms. It may be that while thought that you were not moving an inch, the technician may have noticed some movement while observing you.

Anybody else want to chime in?

Do you think that they could tell my muscles were in spasms through the MRI imaging, I know I did not move a inch, even though at one stage I wanted to scratch my nose because of a itch, but that soon passed by.

Yes he got onto the phone to the doctor before he was going to give me the dye, he said was I okay for a couple of minutes whilst I speak to the doctor on the phone, I then mentioned my muscle spasm & he said if it gets too bad, just squeeze the alarm & I will get you straight out, but I did not squeeze the alarm.

Once he finished his talk with the doctor he said right we are bringing you out now.

So he got on the phone before he was supposed to give you the gadolinium, right?  And then you told him about the spasms, and then they took you out.

I have to think that the results of the MRI without contrast were enough to help the doctor with a diagnosis.  And Ashley's right - if your spine isn't still because you're having spasms, there's no point in giving you the gadolinium contrast agent.

I realised once I posted, that I put telling the Radiologist the wrong way round,

I informed him of my muscle spasms when he asked if I was alright for a couple of minutes whilst he speaks to the doctor on the phone,

I had taken 10mg Diazapan to help me with my muscle spasms, but did not help to much.

What comes to mind for me is that if you were having spasms in your back, you would not be able to remain still enough for clear images, especially the spine.

You may be rescheduled for another time, depending on the results of this scan. If so, they may give you a mild muscle relaxant to minimize the likelihood of spasms during the imaging procedure.
