Swallowing problems?

I've been recently dx with RRMS and started on Copaxone 3 days ago...Yesterday I had 3 episodes in which I choked on my drink.  This wasn't just a situation where it went down the wrong piipe but was actually choking and inhaled the liquid into my lungs.  These all happened at work and really scared not only myself but also my boss and regional manager.  I have also noticed an increase in the need to "clear my throat" or cough over the last couple of days but am not sick.  My question is, could this possibly be a flare up or a symptom of MS as I haven't had this before or could it be from the Copaxone?  Just wondering if anyone else has experienced something like this before...Thanks

I'm still in the start up process to start Copaxone so can't help you on that front.  This sounds like a serious problems though.

It's possible to do fluoroscopic exams that look at the swallow mechanism as you eat and drink.  That would tell you if you are at high risk of aspirating into your lungs.  I know speech therapists do these tests if they have the equipment.  They can also be done in a radiology department.

In the meantime, try to be aware of keeping your chin tucked just a tad when you swallow.  That helps guide what you swallow toward the esophagus and away from the trachea.  Doing a double swallow will also help.

Hope you find your answer.  Maybe a call to the doctor is in order.  Or at least Shared Solutions.

I'm also on Copaxone and haven't heard of this being a possible side effect. I'll be curious if anyone has any input. I've noticed the same thing lately too. I also sometimes can't swallow when I need to and I have to really focus and force myself to do it. It can be pretty scary at times.
