Teeth Grinding

Hi Everyone, haven't really been around much for a while but I keep checking in every now and then.
Hope everyone is doing ok though?

Does anyone else experience teeth grinding?  I know this sounds really odd but for the last few days I have been grinding my teeth when awake and asleep.  Funny thing is when I am awake I don't even realise I am doing it until my jaw starts to ache.  I'm now having to stop myself doing it, it's like my jaw has a mind of it's own.

I know this is a very random question but just curious if it could be related. I am not stressed at the moment which I know can cause people to do this and I have been coming on leaps and bounds. I still have the usual nerve problems, numbness, shocks, balance problems and cramps but I do feel I am certainly heading in the right direction.  I am hopefully going to be returning to work (albeit gradually) in a week or so, if my Dr agrees.  I seem to have some energy back too....it's all good and I think at last I have accepted what is happening to my body and I'm now determined to just get on with it....hooray...!!!

Anyway, I am rambling, back to the teeth thing...any clues?

Thanks

Em x

I am a major teeth grinder, constantly all the time grinding my teeth, awake or asleep!!! I have had complications with TMJ for many years with painful neuropathy on the right side of my head as a result of teeth grinding. Not only are you damaging your teeth but also damaging the nerves that run thru the area where your jaws connect. Once that nerve becomes damaged it can be quite painful. I don't know where you live but I know here in Texas you can go to any pharmacy and purchace a teeth guard, and they are very inexpensive, that you can wear during sleep. They are uncomfortable to wear and takes time to get used to it being in your mouth. But that would be my advise before spending lots of money for the ones thru the dentist. Especially since this condition could leave you as quickly as it came on. In my case, teeth grinding is something i do when I have alot to think about, something involutary when im nervous or anxious about something. Some people twist thier hair, others may play with thier hands....I grind my teeth!!! My advice is to pay close attention to the times when you catch yourself grinding....

Hi Em,

Wanted to wish you well with going back to work, I'm sure it's not going to be easy.

Also, was wondering if the teeth grinding was coincidental w/any change in meds? Just throwing that out there for thoughts.  Although, I am so w/you and the others w/the hubby snoring, oh, my gosh!  On a good note! I've found something, that I've been using for months.   They are Macks Original Silicone Earplugs - they are THE absolute best.

Unfortunately, you can still "feel" the snoring vibrations coming from the bed/mattress (lol!), but seriously, the sound is completely muffled!

Be well,
SL

Hi Hun

Yes i get this problem, my jaw aches afterwards so much and causes my ear to ache and i get a nerve pain down my face then, iv suffered alot with my jaw though since having my wisdom teeth out my jaw locked for three weeks and was stiff for three months best diet i ever went on though!! lol

I take quinine for my cramps at night and temazapam which is a seditive you could try a muscle relaxlant like diazapam but i had to come off that cause of mood swings.

Im having my pelvic mri in two weeks and am worried what they might find most of my propblems are in my lower area and pelvic area at the moment , though saying that my eyes are bad and my memory and word recall is at its worse but maybe thats the meds im on.

Im alot happier and kind of numb the new A/D is very strong and helps me cope with the apin but it leaves me abit out of it and numb to most things.

Iv been out and about shopping in the wheelchair again with my friend and getting around on my stick, my doctor is not overly happy me driving on most of my meds but has let it go for now.

Im glad you might get back to work soon that will be great and im glad your geting about more.

I have a o.t coming round next tuesday to assess my walking and anything they can do to help, iv just worked through the disabilty form which is 45 pgs long my word!!!

Take care

LOL...I know what you mean about the marital discord, what with me grinding teeth and my husband snoring...what a pair.

I actually went to my dentist today as I had a crown fitted but stupidly forgot to mention it, my jaw was so sore from all the grinding and I had to sit there for 2 hours, yes 2 hours, having the prep work down for the crown, quite funny, my legs went numb too and my back seized up, she had to help me up...quite amusing as I got stuck in the chair...well you have to laugh!!!

I don't want the TMJ thingy on top of everything else so I will mention it when I'm back at the dentist next week if it still continues.

Thanks again  Em x

Hi there, Em. I haven't heard that teeth grinding is related to MS, but it certainly can be related to stress. It's sure not good for your teeth, and can lead to TMJ disorder, meaning real problems with the hinge in your jaws. (Also can lead to marital discord :) because of the noise it makes.)

In any case, it can be dealt with fairly easily. Your dentist can make a guard for you to wear, especially when you sleep. Not cheap, but then what is these days?

Glad to read that you're basically doing just fine.
