Update on my daughter Faith!

Hi Everyone,

I just wanted to give everyone an update on my daughter, since you were all so sweet and concerned for her.

We took Faith to the clinic tonight, and it turns out what she has is cellulitis, an infection of the lower layers of skin and the stuff underneath it. The doctor drew a line around the swelling, and then drew another line, about an inch out from the first line and said "If the swelling reaches the second line, do not stop to call anyone, you take her to the ER immediately!!!".

She was given 5 days of amoxicillin (I'm highly allergic, so have gloves) and a topical antibiotic with hydrocortizone called Fucidin H. We're lucky we didn't follow the advice of one of my "know it all friends" who, after looking at the picture declared "that's an allergic reaction to the bug bite, ice it, keep her on benedryl, and it will be fine". Turns out it could be life threatening. The most likely cause is the bug that bit her there.

So, thank you to all who looked at that pic and suggested taking her to the ER, you were right on the money.

I just looked at the new picture of Faithy's leg, and it's amazing how much better it looks after the first dose; I'm so glad it's working.

That must have been really tough for you; good thing she's such a tough little cookie!  I'm so glad you took her in when you did, too.

Hugs,

Kathy

We live out in the country with a lot of woods around the house, and you can't stop boys from wondering around in the woods, so I just check them really good when they come in!  I don't know what is up with the ticks this year, I have never seen so many before!  There are a lot of dear around here so I know to watch for ticks because of Lyme! The bug repellant I mentioned before keeps most bugs, Mosquitio's and ticks off of them!

Last year it was an overflow of ladie bugs, I wonder if the varied weather patterns have anything to do with what kind of bugs are around? Seems like ever year it is something different that seems to be too much of one bug!

Ewwwwwwwwwww ticks gross me RIGHT out. Something about parasites....BLEK. I keep my girls out from under trees and out of long grass because I'd probably pass out if I saw a tick attached to them! LOL

I hate spiders!!!!  We live out at the lake and the Mosquito's are terrible sometimes. I started using this bug repelant on the the boys called Cuttter's Edge, and they have it in a good smelling formula. It works really good for them!  We haven't had as many Mosquito's or flies this year, but the ticks have been really heavy, so having to check the boys each night for ticks!

We think either a spider or a mosquito. We're not sure though.  I too can't believe how much better it looks.

Whew

I posted a couple of pics of Faithy's leg this morning. Last night we were advised to give her 1.5 x the reg dose of amoxicillin (apparently 2x as much would cause really harsh runs all day), and to use the topical antibiotic as well. These pics was taken before her second dose of either antibiotic.

I just can't believe the difference, after only 1 dose of antibiotics!

Ty Pat, Ty Rena,

I'm glad too, and will be happier still when healing starts and we can know FOR SURE that was the problem, although he's a good doc (he's the husband of my old doc, who I just had to switch from due to her limited availability), and he's a dad of a little one, so that helps boost my confidence, as I'm sure he could put himself in our shoes.

It's so funny, I am VERY allergic to penicillins, so I had to ask for gloves to be able to dose her up. I think the pharmacist though I was a bit nutty at first, until Dan interjected that I'm very allergic. Then Dan proceeded to grill him on what was in the topical antibiotic, to be sure I wasn't going to be exposed to anything else I was allergic to. Man, we're a sad family!

2 parents with neurological type symptoms ( his are residual from ADEM)
2 girls in the house allergic to penicillin and
1 mom allergic to every antibiotic except Flagyll (that may be spelled wrong, but if I use the proper name, I KNOW I'll spell it wrong...metronidazole??)
Oh...and 1 child on a penicillin! LOL

Crazy!

Thanks so much for giving us an update!!    I have been thinking about you and Faith all day.

I've never heard of cellulitis, but it sounds scary.   :(    I'm glad she's taking in all in stride and it doesn't seem to affect her that badly.  What a tough cookie!!

I'll keep you in my thoughts and prayers that the swelling goes down and she heals quickly!!!

Thanks again for the update!

Take care, Pat :)

Thanks Penn,

Fortunately, at this point she's not "ill" at all, and seems to be in no pain. The amazing thing about children, they can be incredibly ill without showing any signs of it...other times they can have a mild cold and are laid out like zombies...lol.

Faith's a touch little girl. She will fall on her face and get up and laugh about it saying "wee, that was fun". She's always been like that. I shouldn't be amazed that she's not complaining of pain. She did tell the doctor it hurt, when he asked, but I had been asking her all day, and she just said "nope". LOL
